The Sr. Director of Food and Nutrition programs is responsible for providing top level leadership to program directors and program operations for multiple site locations involving food insecurity and hunger relief programs.  These include:  Senior Nutrition Services and SOVA Food and Community Resource Centers located in the greater Los Angeles area.  S/he will need to ensure the delivery of quality services, personnel management, as well as fiscal management of city and county contracts and grants.  The position also builds and strengthens relationships with key stakeholders, including government and foundation funders, donors, advocacy organizations and other providers.   The Sr. Director of Food and Nutrition Programs is a key member of the agency’s senior leadership team.                     

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of 5 years progressive management and supervisory experience. 
  • Experience working in a non-profit, social service, community or direct service setting environment desired.
  • Strong program development skills with creativity and flexibility, problem solving and follow through ability to manage new, changing, and expanding needs of the client population and funding sources. 
  • Proven project management skills and the ability to think creatively and strategically while executing on aggressive timelines with multiple stakeholders with minimal supervision. 
  • Valid and unrestricted California Driver’s license and good driving record
  • Team leadership and management skills to ensure the building of effective and positive team cultures. 
  • Strong ability to provide mentorship and professional development to ensure growth of leadership skills among program director staff.   
  • Interpersonal skills that reflect the ability to build trust with a diverse community and strategic partners. 
  • Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team setting to manage projects from inception to completion.
  • Effective communication skills with staff, volunteers and clients, and community stakeholders.
  • Ability to combine understanding big picture organizational needs with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong skills and experience in managing to budgets, and overall financial oversight for programs.
  • Background in oversight of database management and inventory control software highly desired. 
  • Proficient computer skills to include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Access to reliable transportation to travel between multiple work sites.
  • Culturally sensitive and able to work with a multicultural client/customer population and ability to work in non-judgmental manner and foster positive outcomes.
  • Flexible with work hours, able to travel between multiple sites, and able to work after hours as needed.
  • Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan fingerprinting) prior to beginning employment.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Ultimate responsibility to ensure effective personnel management of team members and volunteers including hiring, orientation, supervision and ongoing evaluation and staff development.
  • Ultimate responsibility to ensure program effectiveness and quality related to daily operation of (2) site-based food pantries and off-site pop-up pantries, warehouse, food distribution programs, 15 senior dining centers and Kosher production kitchen, as well as site based administrative offices. Provide on call response to emergency situations as needed. 
  • Provide leadership and direction related to strategic planning in terms of developing and implementing strategic initiatives for food and nutrition programs. 
  • Take leadership in development, enhancement of and maintenance of strategic partnerships with funders and partner agencies throughout the city and county. 
  • Provide initiative and leadership to become the agency representative in participation within community-based coalitions, and development of agency partnerships pertaining to food and nutrition service delivery alignment with community and stakeholder needs.   
  • Develop expertise to become the agency key representative of food and nutrition programs and services in the community, with funders/donors, Board members and other stakeholders.  Deliver effective verbal or visual presentations to funders, and lead donor tours of facilities as requested.  
  • Provide weekly individual supervision to program directors.  Provide monthly team meetings to ensure program teamwork and positive team culture building and for professional growth and learning opportunities. 
  • Implement and oversee program quality assurance and improvement process to ensure programs are effective, of high quality and accessible to clients.
  • Regularly assess standards of operation and methods by which opportunities for program development and expansion opportunities are implemented. 
  • Work in partnership with other JFS senior directors to ensure processes and systems are in place to meet client food insecurity needs and facilitate opportunities for program development.
  • Ensure that program directors maintain high standards of staff customer service skills to establish and maintain positive client experiences, and to facilitate relationships with donors and volunteers, as well as effective resolution of client complaints as they occur. 
  • Develop and manage operational budgets for each program department.  Participate in monthly fiscal program review meetings.
  • Assist with writing grant proposals and reports as required for new and ongoing funding sources.
  • Develop systematic and accurate provision of monthly key performance indicators through effective data tracking and management and detailed analysis as required. 
  • Ultimate responsibility to ensure compliance with safety standards required at all food and nutrition facilities. 
  • Other duties as assigned.
