Loyola Marymount University: Circulation Services Evening Supervisor

Reporting to the Circulation Services Manager, this position supervises the Circulation desk during evening hours, typically working Sunday through Thursday, with hours that may vary during summer and intersessions. Assists library patrons by circulating material, answering questions, and ensuring building security. Hires, trains, and supervises all Circulation Services student employees and monitors the departmental Work-Study budget. POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:Serve as the department supervisor and library staff member in charge of the building on duty Sunday through Thursday evenings. Monitor building security and work with other library staff and the Department of Public Safety to ensure safe, comfortable, and equitable conditions for all users.Ensure efficient and exemplary customer service to library patrons. Resolve complex transactions, explain policies, make decisions regarding exceptional circumstances, and report library issues to the Circulation Services Manager or the Head of Access Services.Hire, train, and supervise approximately 45 Circulation Services student employees.Staff the Circulation desk and assist users in person and by phone using excellent oral and written communication skills. Circulate books, media, and equipment to users in accordance with library policy. Assist student employees staffing the desks.Create and maintain work schedules for student employees. Inform student employees about possible schedule changes due to holidays and changes in library hours. Monitor hours worked, approve MyTime, and respond to student employees requests for schedule changes.Monitor Work-Study expenditures against the departments annual allocation on a regular basis.Writes student employees performance reviews.Coordinate with other student employee supervisors to provide consistent supervision across the library. Update policies and procedures in the Public Services Wiki and, Circulation student training in Brightspace, and the circulation student Facebook page when necessary. Suggest new policies or procedures to improve supervision.Handles troubleshooting. Refers emergency situations to appropriate personnel such as Public Safety, Facilities, supervisor, etc., and provides backup support if needed.Represent LMU within the library community and at professional organizations or associations, serve on committees as required.Perform other duties as assigned or requested. EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:Minimum 3 years of experience in a library; academic library experience strongly preferred. Student training or supervisory experience strongly preferred.Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of: academic library functions and standards; customer service standards; Library of Congress Classification System.Exemplary communication skills, both written and oral, as evidenced by effective exchange of work-area information with students, staff, faculty or external contacts to provide non-routine service and support.Highly developed organizational and leadership skills.Demonstrated computer competencies, including Microsoft Office productivity applications and Web browsers. Preferably knowledgeable about integrated library systems. REQUIRED EDUCATION:Typically a Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Constantly required to sit, feel, use finger movement, speak clearly, hear conversation, see near and far. Frequently required to stand and walk.
