Director of Development and Communications

Position overview

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Development and Communications is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all of Pathways LA’s fundraising activities including, annual fund, foundation grants, special events, major gifts, planned giving, and communications.

Highly collaborative, the Director works closely with the CEO and the Board of Directors in all fund development endeavors.

The Director also oversees the communications and marketing functions and builds strong relationships with the community and external stakeholders.

An experienced manager and developer, this individual will directly oversee the agency’s Outreach Manager, Policy Manager, PR Consultants and graphic artists.

Roles & responsibilities

Development Strategy & Fundraising

Update and monitor annual development plan in keeping with the organization’s values, mission, vision, and plans.

Grow a major gifts program including identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major donors.

Direct employee fundraising drives and gift recognition programs.

Establish and cultivate relationships with prospective donors through moves management structure, including individual and corporate donors, foundations, philanthropic organizations, community partners.

Build the planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequest expectancies.

Oversee grants program including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements.

Provide assistance and support to Board of Directors and relevant Board committees in their fund development roles.

Oversee the effective use of fundraising and other software and technology within the development and administrative departments.

Communications & Organizational Leadership

Develop, implement, and manage marketing and communications strategies to support community awareness, outreach and fundraising activities, including marketing materials, media relations, and social media.

Make public appearances and accept speaking engagements to share information about Pathways LA with the greater Los Angeles community.

Manage, lead and evaluate fund development, communications, and policy staff.

Participate responsibly and demonstrate professional conduct as a member of the senior management team.

Ensure Agency compliance with legal, contractual, and internal policy requirements.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Communications, Public Relations or relevant field.

At least 5 years’ experience in fundraising focused on individual and institutional giving, grant writing, public relations and marketing, and donor relations management.

Ability to effectively manage a team of employees and consultants.

Demonstrated knowledge of family services, child care and early education, services for low-income/vulnerable populations or related content area, preferred.

Excellent written, interpersonal, and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills.

Must be computer savvy and proficient in using CRMs.

Skilled in working effectively with a diverse group of donors and organizations
