Mental Health Specialist
– BIH PROGRAM

Overall Function

The Mental Health Specialist (MHS) will identify relevant mental health resources; oversee case management services and as needed provide basic counseling services to BIH participants.

The MHS will also advise Program Supervisor on new client’s assignments to FHA’s, as well as participate in recruitment activities.

Reports to: Program Supervisor

Essential Job Responsibilities:

1.

Conducts case conferences with BIH staff

2.

Identifies and coordinates staff development activities (training and lectures) to increase staff knowledge of mental health services.

3.

Performs case file audits

4.

Attends CDPH/MCAH sponsored BIH training, as well as subsequent BIH advanced trainings

5.

Coordinates and conducts client enrollment activities which include an orientation, informed consent, and the initial assessment.

6.

Conduct mental health services for BIH clients including Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and participation in group sessions as needed, answering questions on mental health issues and providing support to the Group Facilitators.

7.

Provides medical health education to clients when requested by the FHA’s

8.

Identify relevant mental health resources; develop and maintain relationships with local mental health professionals for client referrals

9.

Maintains confidentiality and adheres to HIPAA regulations

10.

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

1.

MA Degree in social work, psychology, or counseling from an accredited college or university

2.

Minimum of three years of experience providing direct services to African-American women

3.

Working knowledge of public health issues, resources and services.

4.

Fully embrace and support the BIH Governing Concepts of cultural competence, client centered, strength-based and utilization of cognitive skill building approaches

5.

Excellent written/oral communication skills

6.

Excellent interpersonal skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills

7.

Computer literate

Experience:

1.

One year of professional experience working as a mental health professional that included maternal, infant and child health

2.

Knowledge of women women’s health, including prenatal and postpartum mental health and psychosocial issues

3.

Experienced working with low income, minority and inner-city populations

4.

Knowledge and understanding of community services, including but not limited to: social services, mental health, substance abuse treatment programs, domestic violence programs, legal systems, housing and other resources for referral
