The Specialty Finance Group is a national team within WIM’s Banking, Lending & Trust center of excellence that provides specialized expertise by structuring, underwriting and managing large and highly complex commercial-type credits for Ultra High Net Worth individuals. 

While this senior Lending Officer position will not have direct reports from a personnel standpoint, the functional role is that of a loan team manager responsible for SFG’s Securities sleeve in the western half of the country.  The SFG Securities sleeve covers new & existing credit relationships centered around marketable secured or unsecured credits, but will also have exposure to aircraft, ESOP Monetization Lending, and other SFG specialty areas.  The current portfolio covered by this role includes $2.8B of commitments over 70 distinct relationships.

This Lending Officer will be a team lead for a team of senior UWs responsible for structuring, underwriting and execution of new transactions in this area, as well as ongoing management of the portfolio.  The Lending Officer will have credit approval authorities consistent with the LTM role and function in that capacity in the credit recommendation, approval and portfolio management processes.  The Lending Officer will also gain exposure to SFG’s other specialized lending areas, including: semi-liquid securities (restricted/concentrated stock positions, Operating Partnership Units, etc), private stock, fine art lending, ESOP monetization lending, capital markets, alternative assets and other complex situations and non-traditional asset classes.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Develops subject matter expertise SFG Securities sleeve and other SFG specialty areas.
  • Leads a team of underwriters to deliver high quality custom credit solutions in these specialized areas;  Leads the efficient, accurate and timely delivery of credit by managing and balancing production of day to day underwriting and portfolio management.
  • Provides recommendations and guidance to clients, relationship managers, Custom Credit Bankers and senior credit approvers during all aspects of the credit underwriting, approval, delivery and ongoing risk management processes.  Actively partners with these groups to grow new loan volume in a proactive and responsible fashion.
  • Ensures appropriate legal documentation of credit transactions in compliance with Company standards and approved credit terms. 
  • Oversees the team’s portfolio management functions and processes to ensure loan performance, compliance with financial reporting and covenant requirements, maintenance of risk rating accuracy and escalation of problem credits.
  • Ensures compliance with government regulatory requirements as well as company credit policies and procedures.
  • Exercises approval authority on new and existing credit requests as well as other operational items including exceptions and overrides; drives a consistent and balanced credit culture by managing asset quality standards with growth objectives.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships within Wealth Management and internal business partners in the broader Wells Fargo community; engages in consultative coaching and training to Custom Credit Bankers, CRG RMs, and other leadership teams around SFG offerings.

Location is open to any WIM hub office, although portfolio coverage will be primarily in the PT, MT and CT timezones.

The salary range displayed below is based on a Full-time 40 hour a week schedule:

MN-Minneapolis:  Min: $108,500 Mid: $155,000 Max: $201,500
IL-Chicago:  Min: $119,400 Mid: $170,500 Max: $221,700
TX-DAL-Downtown Dallas:  Min: $108,500 Mid: $155,000 Max: $201,500
CA-LA-Downtown Los Angeles:  Min: $119,400 Mid: $170,500 Max: $221,700 

Salary range is determined by location of the job.

May be considered for a discretionary bonus, Restricted Share Rights or other long-term incentive awards

Required Qualifications

  • 12+ years of lending experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Other Desired Qualifications

  • 8+ years of credit experience in private banking or corporate commercial banking
  • 4+ years of management experience
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of credit underwriting, risk management, portfolio management and sales/client management processes in Private Banking, Commercial Banking and/or Investment Banking/Capital Markets.
  • Prior experience with the SFG platform as to underwriting and collaboration.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial accounting theory and logic, financial statement analysis, loan structuring and commercial banking products and services.
  • Strong credit skills including an ability to develop, negotiate, and document a broad range of loan types, structures and complex requests.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication skills and partnering skills.
  • Ability to make sound, independent business and credit decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead high performing teams in the underwriting, execution and servicing of loan transactions and portfolios. 
  • Formal commercial credit training or MBA.

Job Expectations

  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time
