Job Description:

The Associate Director of Sports and Wellness is responsible for the leadership, supervision and day-to-day operations of the University’s Fitness Centers, which include management of facilities, fitness programming, adventure-based off campus experiences, fitness education and supervision of adjunct Fitness Education faculty and student staff. The Associate Director acts on behalf of the Director when assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains an outcomes-based programming model, centered on the principles of inclusion, empowerment, and personal well-being.
  • Leads departmental assessment efforts by serving as the department expert in student learning, evaluation and assessment, including the development and maintenance of standards for all programs based on student learning outcomes.
  • Assess, develops and implements risk management policies and procedures that support the University and Department’s Strategic goals, and ensure facilities are in compliance with codes and regulations. This includes the coordination of staff safety trainings and certifications.
  • Manages all aspects of the Fitness Education one-credit academic courses, including the hiring, supervision and evaluation of adjunct faculty, and regular assessment of course offerings.
  • Teaches a 1-unit Fitness Education course (PED 100).
  • Responsible for all aspects of an extensive student employment program including recruitment, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation.
  • Coordinates the planning and implementation of Fitness membership programs for the institution as needed.
  • Collaborates with other campus units and academic programs to enhance the educational and experiential opportunities for MSMU students.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides support to the Sports and Wellness program and various facilities as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with internal and external partners to support delivery of programs and services that enhance the general education and development of students.
  • Participates in various Student Affairs Division and university committees and task forces as requested.
  • Performs other job-related duties, as assigned.


Requirements:

Knowledge:

  • Extensive knowledge of higher education administration and student development theory along with sound understanding of the concepts of fitness and recreational activities and the educational sports, as well as staff and student development.
  • Sufficient working knowledge of anatomy, physiology and fitness principles and women’s issues necessary for implementing a complete fitness program.

Abilities and Skills: 

  • Strong oral and written communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively manage a multi-faceted facility and program maintaining exemplary levels of customer service throughout all programs and services.
  • Strong supervisory skills and excellent fiscal, organizational, prioritization, administrative and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to foster and promote an integrated team approach to student programming and successfully assess programming impact on learning outcomes.

Education: 

  • Master’s degree required from an accredited college/university, preferably the degree is in recreation, fitness education, sports management, exercise science, wellness, or related field.

Experience:

  • Three or more years’ experience required in programming and teaching in areas of fitness, wellness, fitness education and/or recreation – preferably in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience working on projects/initiatives in a collaborative manner.
  • Preferred, a minimum of five years of professional experience at the assistant director level in a campus recreation setting.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Current First-aid/AED and CPR Instructor certification or obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • Fitness Instructor certification from American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), American Council on Exercise (ACE), Athletic and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), or comparable organization or obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • Preferred, Wilderness First Aid or higher from National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS).
