C40’s team of 200+ staff is headquartered in New York, with offices in London, Joburg, Singapore, Delhi, Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Beijing and Paris, and individual staff based across 25+ different locations, with the Office of the Chair based in Los Angeles.

The strategic direction of the organisation is determined by an elected Steering Committee of C40 mayors which is chaired by the Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti.

Bloomberg serves as President of the C40 Board of Directors, which is responsible for operational oversight.

A nine-person management team, led by Executive Director, Mark Watts, leads the day-to-day management of C40.

C40’s three core strategic funders are Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and Realdania.

Position Description

The Steering Committee Senior Manager works closely with the Director of the Office of the C40 Chair, the Managing Director of Governance and the Managing Director of International Diplomacy to support Mayor Garcetti in his role as C40 Chair, including by managing the work, processes and relationships of the Steering Committee.

Responsibilities:

Support for the Office of the C40 Chair
Support the elections and transition process for the next C40 Chair (currently underway) in accordance with the C40 Terms of Reference
Steering Committee
Manage the elections process to the Steering Committee in accordance with the C40 Terms of Reference, including drafting memoranda, presentations and timetables in collaboration with Regional Directors Manage Steering Committee meetings, including helping set the agenda (in liaison with the Director of the Office of the C40 Chair and C40 Management Team); managing the process in the lead up to each Steering Committee meeting in liaison with C40 colleagues; ensure C40 Governance team (in Executive Director’s Office) is kept informed of all Steering Committee matters; drafting, soliciting input from C40 colleagues and finalizing meeting agenda and papers; drafting briefing papers and talking points for the C40 Chair; manage al in-person Steering Committee meeting logistics; support in staffing the C40 Chair at Steering Committee meetings, drafting meeting minutes and key action items from Steering Committee meetings; maintaining a timeline of all activities and deadlines required for Steering Committee meetings; and scheduling individual prep calls with Steering Committee cities in advance of each meeting.

Manage relationships with and serve as the primary point of contact forkey contacts from each Steering Committee city.

Keep the Steering Committee contact list up-to-date.

Support Vice Chairs’ sectoral leadership roles by contributing to the development of workplans in collaboration with C40 colleagues.

Support to ensure the C40 Terms of Reference are strictly adhered to.

Chair’s speaking engagements and private meetings
Develop scheduling requests, briefing papers and talking points, and oversee logistical arrangements for the C40 Chair’s speaking engagements and private meetings taken on behalf of C40.

Support tri-weekly calls between the C40 Chair and C40 staff including drafting agenda and supporting materials.

Provide support for the Chair’s external communications, including drafting letters and emails; get approval and finalize circulation.

Support the Chair / C40 communication teams on content approval, e.g.

op-ed, press release quotes, etc.

Person Specification:
Candidates shall have a demonstrated interest in addressing climate change and/or public service.  All candidates shall have a demonstrated ability to work in a high pressure, professional environment; possess strong interpersonal skills, good analytical ability, and an ability to work in diplomatic and collaborative manner with multiple stakeholders.

Strong writing, communication and organizational skills required, preferably in an environmental and sustainability arena.

Strong ability in speech writing is preferable.

Demonstrable experience in government, the nonprofit and/or the private sector.

Preference will be given to candidates with climate change, politics and speechwriting experience.

Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required.

Ability to prepare digital presentations (PowerPoint, keynote, Excel, graphics).

Other Requirements:

Applicants must already have the right to work in the country where they apply.

Possible Travel to Glasgow, Scotland for COP26 and other travel will be required as part of the role.
