Media Relations Manager-Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center

Responsibilities

In this role, you will provide media outreach and place stories for UCLA’s oncology-focused research and clinical care for the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and partners such as UCLA Health, Broad Stem Cell Research Center at UCLA (BSCRC), Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation (JCCF) and David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) at UCLA.

The stories will be placed with local, regional, national and international news media and other key audiences, using traditional and social media channels.

The position will develop and execute strategic media relations plans with high impact of key audiences.

Responsibilities include the following:
developing story ideas and working with news media to place those stories in an increasingly competitive news environment
building relationships with faculty, UCLA oncologists and media representatives
writing clinical care and research articles, press releases and research alerts
translating complex scientific topics that reporters and members of the general public can understand in a compelling manner

highlighting UCLA Health’s highly-rated clinical care offerings with its physicians and through its hospitals, clinics and clinical trials.
You will identify and contribute content for the JCCC and UCLA campus newsroom website, collaborate with UCLA Health Marketing and UCLA campus media/marketing to place media stories and campaigns on UCLA social media platforms and websites, and utilize a personal work Twitter account to promote press releases and stories.

Qualifications

Outstanding written and oral communication skills
Solid professional judgement.
Demonstrated record of successful national, regional and local media relations planning, implementation and placement
Experience managing a comprehensive media relations campaign, including handling a high volume of media inquiries, often with simultaneous deadlines
Experience writing effective media content that meets journalistic style codes, has correct grammar and punctuation, and is suitable for publication (magazines, newspapers, online) and/or broadcast (radio, television)
Ability to translate complicated scientific material into language both understandable and attractive to the news media
Ability to produce top-quality written content that interprets scientific and professional data for the general reader
Experience researching, prepping and conducting effective interviews, specifically with scientists, researchers, healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers and donors
Preferred:
Bachelor degree in relevant field
Understanding print, broadcast and online news media operations, including how stories are assigned, covered and reported
Ability to manage media outlets in all aspects of on-site video shoots, including to consult and collaborate on subject matter, plan schedules, supervise production and finalize and ensure delivery
