Job Description

The Director of Practical Process Improvement (PPI) Business Systems is responsible for the implementation of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Continuous Improvement Business System within the BioProduction Group (BPG). Reporting to the Sr Director, Strategic Portfolio Management, the Director of Business Operations partners with the Division’s Leadership Team to assist in developing ongoing priorities, overseeing timelines for milestone achievement, and ensuring sound business processes. In this role, you will work closely with business leadership and sites to establish and mature the PPI System across the organization, while utilizing other coaching tools to facilitate the cultural transformation. This position partners with key stakeholders to establish multi-year plans via strategy deployment tools and leading kaizen events to enable the teams to achieve their business goals and objectives. Lastly, it involves recruiting, managing, and developing a group of direct and indirect reports.

Job Responsibilities

  • Facilitate implementation of the PPI Business System across BPG (and functions) to achieve targets in growth, quality, customer satisfaction, cash flow, and productivity.

  • Develop and facilitate STRAP deployment in alignment with company goals: cascade STRAP goals through to execution at the appropriate levels using X-Matrices, Parent A3s, Project A3s and TTI Bowlers.

  • Execute large strategic cross-functional initiatives and establish/measure Key Performance/Behavioral Indicators

  • Establish and mature the Lean Management System (KPI Leadership, tiered daily management systems, Gemba walks, and leader standard work) and other coaching tools to transform the culture.

  • Drive development of leaders, PPI practitioners, and the general population relative to the PPI Business System.

  • Develop/promote/standardize the PPI Business System further. Share best practices and drive continuous improvement and Standard Work across all organizational elements.

  • Partner with business leaders to develop, standardize, and drive operating mechanisms that drive key performance indicator visibility, accountability, and action planning to continually improve business performance and the culture of kaizen.

  • Lead the group PPI Steering Committee to ensure there is an active pipeline of PPI projects aligned to business priorities, metrics and results. Ensure that there is a solid sustainability mechanism/review for past projects.

  • Partner with business Vice President/General Managers and provide linkage to strategy, cross- functional alignment, and lean leadership.

  • Coach and mentor site operations and PPI leaders to drive improvements, best practice sharing and harmonization throughout the network sites.

  • PPI alignment including goal setting, identification and execution of the ‘right’ improvement efforts, and productivity recognition.

  • Improve the decision making, critical thinking, and problem solving capabilities within high performance teams to increase autonomy and the pace of change.

  • Work with the expanded team to develop/promote/standardize the PPI Business System further.

  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally as needed.

Experience

  • Advanced Lean practitioner with 10+ years of experience with PPI Business Systems, or comparable prior experience working in the Toyota Production System (TPS), Danaher Business System (DBS), Honeywell Operating System (HOS), or other recognized Lean/Six Sigma business system models across the end-to-end value stream.

  • 10+ years of operations and/or engineering experience working for a world class, multinational organization preferred.

  • A ‘hands-on’ track record of implementing successful Continuous Improvement (CI) elements such as: Lean Leadership (Daily Management, Leader Standard Work, and Gemba Walks) in and out of operations environments.

  • Experience leading Kaizen events including elements such as standard work, cell design, process and product 3P, Value-Analysis/Value Engineering, error-proofing, material flow, heijunka, and kanban.

  • Demonstrated experience leading teams through transformational change.

  • Proven track record of identifying and delivering year-over-year results using metric-driven problem solving.

  • Proven track record for developing, training, and coaching international teams.

  • Self-directed leader with a proven ability to manage/influence across and up into the organization without direct reporting responsibility.

  • Strategic planning / strategy deployment expertise are required.

  • Operations Management experience required (Plant Management experience is a plus).

  • Project Management experience or certification a plus.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, operations or business, with evidence of operational, leadership, or professional experience. (MBA a plus)
