The ASPCA’s Community Medicine (CM) program provides expert veterinary care to support the welfare of animals and their people at our Community Veterinary Centers (CVCs) and mobile clinics in Los Angeles, New York and Miami. We help pet owners overcome barriers to care, bringing quality services directly to the communities that need us most and partially or fully subsidizing the cost of basic and preventive care. What you’ll do:

The Director of Nursing oversees the quality of nursing care and accuracy and tone in which medical information is shared with clients by all medical support staff in CM’s Western Region, , a large and complex veterinary medical program currently serving LA (city and county).  As a key member of the Regional Management Team, you will work hand-in-glove with the Medical Director and operational leadership to ensure CM programs in your region function at a high level with top-performing teams, outstanding animal care and superb client experience.  This is a fast-paced, challenging and exciting role that requires strong people leadership experience, including the ability to achieve goals through effective collaboration, change leadership and staff development.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

People Leadership (50%):

  • In lockstep with your partners on the Regional Management Team (Medical Director, Sr. Director of Operations, Regional Coordinator), monitor quality and productivity of Los Angles programs through regular in-person visits, observations and assessments; support Directors in identifying root causes of problems and coach through corrective action plans as needed
  • Provide coaching and mentorship on nursing procedures, techniques, as well as SVA duties directly to staff and to Medical Managers and Assistant Managers (dotted line reports-6) through regular and direct feedback
  • Assist Medical Staff Managers and Assistant Medical Staff Managers to hire, train and develop a talented team of professionals to staff the South LA Spay/Neuter Clinic Mobile Veterinary Programs and two proposed Community Veterinary Centers. 
  • Promote strong collaborative team culture and deep employee engagement aligned with the ASPCA’s core values and in partnership with the Learning & Development and People teams.
  • Lead the medical teams through transitions and change; promote resiliency and effective adoption of new ways of working

Medical Strategy and Daily Operations (50%): 

  • Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), Business Operations, and your peers on the Regional Management Team to inform CM’s national strategy; develop medical policies and protocols to execute at the program level
  • Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), Business Operations, and your peers on the Regional Management Team to develop and design two Community Veterinary Centers for Los Angeles which will meet the specific needs of CM LA programming. 
  • Provide feedback on flow of patients and clients through the facility to maximize efficiency and provide creative solutions to overcome bottlenecks where they exist.
  • Oversee all aspects of nursing care for medical and surgical cases in the Western Region including, pre- and post-operative care, anesthesia monitoring, Foster/PeeWee intake, PeeWee protocols, and other nursing duties. 
  • Consult on the purchase and maintenance of clinic equipment through coordination with CVC Director, Facilities and outside vendors.
  • Oversee documentation and use of controlled drugs and spot check controlled drug logs for accuracy.  
  • Collaborate with ASPCA’s Foster and PeeWee Programs to prioritize internal veterinary needs
  • Identify gaps in CM SOPs and assist the VP of Medicine and the Medical Director in the creation of and revision of CM Standard Operating Procedures and other CM related medical materials. 
  • Cooperate and communicate regularly with the Regional Medical Director and Senior Director of Operations to achieve team goals focused on the CM’s four priorities: team, animals, clients and operational excellence
  • Collaborate with the Director of Learning and Development to create and execute an onboarding and training program for CM senior veterinary assistants and technicians; assist medical staff managers in assessing training progress and addressing gaps as needed
  • Partner with the Talent Acquisition Team to recruit nursing students from area vet tech programs; participate in campus career fairs student presentations to attract top nursing students to the ASPCA
  • Represent the ASPCA in the media and other communications.
  • Represent CM on cross-functional team projects as needed

Additional Information

  • This is a full-time, exempt position based in Los Angeles reporting to a variety of program locations.  This role requires schedule flexibility as some early mornings, evenings and/or weekends will be required.
  • Occasional remote/work from home is possible up to two days per week
  • Regular travel to ASPCA locations in the Los Angeles area and other locations in the Western Region as well as to business offices in New York City.
  • Up to 25% travel may be required.

Compensation and Benefits:

Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring salary range for this role is set forth below and may be modified in the future. 

The target hiring range for this role is $102,000 – $109,000

Experience and interest in providing high quality customer service is required, Minimum 2 years prior supervisory experience in an animal hospital or clinic environment preferred, Minimum 5 years experience with surgery/anesthesia as a Registered Veterinary Technician in a veterinary hospital, shelter, or mobile clinic environment
