We see a seminal, catalytic role for philanthropy in initiating a new innovation ecology suited for the must-solve problems of our times, by taking on the early risk of trying new methods for R& D and developing effective approaches that other sectors can adopt and scale.

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Director of Development to work closely with Actuate’s leadership team to build on our early fundraising success.

The Director of Development will play a key role in accelerating our fundraising efforts and securing the funds needed for the development stage of our core programs.The Director of Development will report to the CEO and work in close collaboration with the senior leadership team to manage an existing pipeline of institutional supporters and find new funding opportunities.

This role will require strong project management, research, grant writing and donor communication skills to support our fundraising efforts with foundations and high-net-worth individuals.

The ideal candidate has experience in a nonprofit fundraising team helping to build and manage a portfolio of donors, has excellent communications skills, responds quickly to changing conditions, and is a team player willing to jump in on tasks of any size.

This is a dynamic opportunity for someone who is a builder seeking to bring big, bold ideas to life.As the first hire for Actuate’s fundraising team, the Director of Development has the opportunity to build the engine from the ground up with Actuate’s future donor coalition executive and fundraising associates.Key ResponsibilitiesSupport the CEO to strengthen relationships with a pipeline of current and potential funders, including:Cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with individuals and foundations through regular correspondenceMaintaining excellent follow-up and long-term stewardship plansDrafting/ghostwriting emails when appropriatePrepping the CEO for donor meetings with meeting briefsOverseeing and managing donor-related information in SalesforcePartner with the CEO to expand Actuate’s funding base, by:Researching and scoping new potential fundersTracking donor interests by staying on top of philanthropic news and trendsFinding unique ways to engage with networks of new supporters (through small, targeted events or conferences)Tapping into an existing base of prospects through Actuate’s extensive networkGenerate content that persuasively outlines Actuate’s vision and progress, by:Writing and revising concept papers, grant proposals, and grant reportsCrafting and critiquing pitch decks and materials for meetings with donors and prospectsBuild the appropriate systems for the long-term success of the development function, including a system for maintaining donor records, and tracking grant deliverables and budgets to provide accurate reporting.Essential Criteria5-7 years of relevant experience on a nonprofit fundraising team.A startup mentality – understanding that priorities may shift, but the overall goal of building a fundraising engine for Actuate will remain consistent.Experience cultivating and securing institutional grants of $500,000, and managing the stewardship process for a portfolio of donors.Ability to manage complex projects and multi-task with excellent organization skills.Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.Comfort communicating with funders of all kinds and sharing impact in a compelling way.Comfort with a fast-paced environment and changing requirements.High computer proficiency; very capable in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.Other DetailsWe will consider candidates located anywhere in the U.S.

You will be expected to be available during working hours on the West Coast, where most of our staff are located.
