Employment Status:Per DiemJob Category:Administrative & ProfessionalJOB SUMMARY:The Unit Secretary provides general clerical support to the departmental manager, staff, physicians, and patients in accordance with established guidelines and procedures, such as Meditech entry, filing, and the answering of telephones & call lights.

Normally receives general instructions on all assignments and in accordance with the standards, policies, and practices of Valley Presbyterian Hospital.EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:Must demonstrate technical competence, professional clinical judgment, communication skills and sensitivity for the patient and familiesPrior experience in clerical/general office, including tpying, filing, sorting, records maintenance, and chart sorting preferredStrong customer service skills required to communicate with patients, departmental internal/external clients, staff, and physiciansMust possess the ability to effectively coordinate multiple projects, use time management skills, problems solveEDUCATION:High school diploma or equivalentLICENSURES/CERTIFICATION:Must successfully complete and maintain LA County Fire Card certification at the time of hire or within the first 30 days of employment.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (These are the essential job functions for this position.

Employees hired for this position must be able to perform the essential function of this job without imposing significant risk of substantial harm to the health or safety of themselves or others):Attends nursing station, performs clerical and reception duties, and requisitions supplies, equipment and services as directed.Assembles and charts information about patients, such as temperature, pulse and respiration.Posts and distributes information according to procedures or specific direction.Maintains daily census and other pertinent records, checks records for completeness, transfers doctor’s notes to appropriate forms.Performs clerical work for admissions, transfer and discharge of patients according to established standards.Interacts with visitors, patients, members of medical and nursing staff and other departments.Answers patient call lights and in-coming telephone calls.PHYSICAL DEMANDSFrequent sitting and standing/walking with frequent position change.Continuous use of bilateral upper extremities in fine motor activities requiring fingering, grasping, and forward reaching between waist and chest level.Occasional/intermittent reaching at or above shoulder level.Occasional/intermittent bending, squatting, kneeling, pushing/pulling, twisting, and climbing.Occasional/intermittent lifting and carrying objects/equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.Continuous use of near vision, hearing and verbal communication skills in handling telephone calls, interacting with customers and co-workers and performing job duties.
