Ultrasound Technologist

Responsibilities
Produce diagnostic images and hemodynamic testing of the human anatomy utilizing both stationary and portable ultrasound equipment.

Record patient images via appropriate archival media, transfer images as needed.

Review clinical information regarding patient along with images with the Radiologist.

Achieve images onto appropriate media, follow UCLA Radiology Department’s verification process, and maintain accurate up-to-date records of procedures performed.

Maintain departmental quality standards.

Explain to fellows, residents, and new employee the methods of scanning and equipment operations when directed.

Practice sterile techniques, maintain aseptic conditions and use universal precautions at all times.

Perform first aid on patients to maintain patient’s health until further assistance arrives.
Exercise strict patient confidentiality.

Monitor patient’s comfort while in the ultrasound department.

Demonstrate a professional attitude by being courteous towards patients, co-workers, and physicians.

Review Radiology request for appropriateness.

Coordinate exams with other services as needed.

Coordinate transfer of patient to the observation area as needed.

Communicate with Nursing units’ pertinent patient information.

Perform various types of ultrasound exams according to departmental protocol.

Follow departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

Commitment to customer service and Health Systems C-ICARE initiative.
Float between all UCLA Health Department of Radiology ultrasound locations.

Adhere to on-call, holiday, and weekend schedules as prepared by the manager.

Participate in rotating shifts as required.
Ensure Radiology requisitions are properly completed.

Initiate proper requests for required maintenance or repair of equipment.

Inspect all devices for damage and ensure they are operating within accepted parameters.

Maintain accurate record of all supplies used and initiate orders to maintain supply par levels.

Maintain work area in a clean and orderly fashion.

Comply with Medical Center health and infection control policies.

Comply with personnel standards in employee and technologist handbooks.

Adhere to departmental attendance and tardiness policies.

Comply with sonographers Code of Practice.

Graduate of CAAHAP school is preferred.

Must maintain Active RDMS certification in one specialty, i.e.

Abdomen or OB-GYN.

Qualifications
Required:
Active RDMS certification in one specialty, i.e.

Abdomen or OB-GYN
BLS/CPR
Ability to accept and carry out oral and written instructions accurately.
Skill in performing daily tasks independently, while working as part of a team, within a demanding environment.
Ability to promote team ownership of a project and avoid personal control.
Ability to prioritize work, handling multiple tasks to completion, within the time allotted.
Excellent interpersonal skills effectively and diplomatically with patients, visitors, hospital staff, physicians, and other outside offices both in person and over the phone.
Excellent communication skills both verbal and written with persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
Skill in speaking clearly and distinctly in English, using appropriate vocabulary and grammar.
Skill in reading documents written in Standard English, including (but not limited to) requisitions, medical, documents, and policy and procedure manuals technical and operator equipment manual.
Knowledge of medical terminology, with ability to distinguish between
– types of procedures within the assigned department(s) and medical diagnoses.
Telephone manners and skills to handle heavy telephone lines with courtesy and tact.
Excellent skill in performing under the stress of frequent interruptions and/or distractions.
Ability to respond efficiently to expressed needs of referring services, physicians and patients.
Ability to be courteous, professional and diplomatic in any given situation, particularly with patients who are anxious and agitated.
Ability to be flexible with working hours given adequate notice.
Demonstrate consistent professional appearance.
Skill in employing independent decision making while performing various job functions.
Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies.
Understand the requirements of the EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act).
Ability to identify and recognize contraindications for exams.

Ability to show attention to detail, accuracy and thoroughness.
Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationships with all levels of staff.
Basic typing skills to input various data into Information systems.
