We are seeking a Surgical Technologist II who will be under the general supervision of the circulating registered nurse and in collaboration with the service-line coordinators, clinical supervisors and surgery manager, the surgical technologist II is an individual with demonstrated competence in surgical scrubbing technique(s) who provides scrub services for the department by: Ensuring the functionality, availability and sterility of OR supplies and equipment prior to the start of the daily caseload. Scrubbing and handling instruments during surgical procedures. Adhering to standards of aseptic technique in all phases of surgical intervention. Demonstrating competence in performing scrub services for a variety of surgical procedures. Assisting service-line coordinators in receiving and stocking supplies/equipment for a cluster of specialties. Reporting variations in stock inventory level(s) to the service-line coordinators and materials management. Communicating opportunities for systems improvement to the service-line coordinators and surgery manager. Participating in selected patient care activities such as room turnover and transporting as needed. Participating in meeting the department’s budgetary objectives. Supporting the philosophy, objectives and goals of hospital administration and its representatives.

In this position you will:

  • Demonstrate competency in selected clinical skills including but not limited to surgical procedures, equipment use and set up, aseptic technique and sterilization standards
  • Communicate pertinent information to the director, manager, clinical supervisor, service-line coordinator and/or other clinical and non-clinical staff in a timely manner so that problem resolution may take place without delay
  • Participate in the on-call rotation (as eligible) to provide coverage for after hours, weekend, low-census days during regular business hours and holiday surgical cases, with a requirement to arrive in the department within 30 minutes of being notified by the hospital
  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own professional practice in regard to:

  • Obtaining necessary knowledge and skill needed to maintain competence and certifications
  • Completing all mandatory requirements
  • Participate in the development and attainment of team, department and hospital goals including:

  • Able to orient and proctor students and new staff members in surgical service-lines and the department
  • Assist with surgical procedures as a surgical technologist
  • Maintain and monitor sterile technique and supplies
  • Clean, assemble, and safely operates highly technical equipment
  • Participate in quality improvement/cost efficiency efforts
  • Prepare for each surgical procedure utilizing the surgeon’s preference card to pick appropriate supplies and equipment that is procedure-specific
  • Update preference cards and provides information to service-line coordinator
  • Demonstrate competency for assembling all equipment and instrumentation relative to competency in identified specialties
  • Show care when handling delicate instruments and communicates to the service-line coordinator and the sterile processing department when instruments are broken or in need of repair
  • Maintain surgical instrument integrity by following best practice for instrument care during the procedure and when transporting to the sterile processing department
  • Organization of care:

  • Participate in counts in compliance with established count policy
  • Facilitate room turnover and case flow
  • Demonstrate organizational skills in set-up of surgical field with the ability to anticipate the surgeon’s needs
  • Provide age appropriate care
  • Assist team in obtaining needed resources for procedures. Makes recommendations to OR manager regarding equipment and supplies
  • Ensure that appropriate supplies and equipment are available, accounted for and used in a cost-effective manner
  • Productivity:
  • Organize, prioritize and complete activities and assignments in an efficient manner
  • Demonstrate initiative in assisting others and performing other duties based on skill level and training
  • Use all work time productively in work-related activities
  • Set up sterile field with all needed instruments, disposables, implants, etc. according to established procedures
  • Receive and handle all medications, fluids, specimens, etc. on the operative field according to accepted practice and policies/procedures
  • Carefully checks drapes for instruments prior to properly disposing of them according to established procedures
  • Assist circulator with proper disposition of reusable and disposable items as well as items to be reprocessed at the end of the case

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Completion of an accredited surgical technologist course (not required if more than 10 years of experience)
  • High School Diploma -OR- GED
  • American Heart Association BLS
  • CST (Certified Surgical Technologist)
  • Experience as a surgical technologist with the ability to competently scrub all regularly performed procedures in five of the eight core service-line clusters (cardiac, thoracic/vascular, orthopedics, spine, general/urology/gynecology, EENT/plastics/maxillofacial, neuro, robotics). Of the five service-lines, three must be general/urology/gynecology, orthopedics, and spine
  • For internal candidates, the minimum experience can be waived if the ability to scrub in the service-lines as listed above is met
