Senior R&D Engineer – Injection Molding/Plastic Design

The role reports to R&D Team Manager and is located in Memphis, Tennessee.

As a Senior Engineer
– Plastic Design, responsible for leading or assisting others in developing new products and sustainment of existing products which are high volume production plastic parts.

In addition, this role will support front loaded innovation activities that held feed a pipeline of new products.

Your responsibilities Manage new plastic part design projects and lead cross-functional teams through established development process.

Function as our SME in plastic materials knowledge and functionality in the creation of new parts and in the evaluation of improving existing designs.

Provide technical guidance and responses to both internal and external customer inquiries concerning new and existing plastic molded products.

Lead or support innovation activities focused on plastic design through an established process.

Perform design activities such as 3D modeling, simulation, DFMEA, DFM, verification, prototyping and testing.

Perform failure and root cause analysis, product testing, and support for certification listings.

Perform engineering documentation and control activities such as drawings, BOMs, label artworks, instruction sheets, and technical data sheets creation and modification, and ECNs utilizing a global life cycle management system (GPLM).

Work with cross-functional departments and team members from Product Management, Supply Chain Management, Codes and Standards, Technical Services, Operations, QC, R&D, etc.

Your background Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Plastics, Polymer, Mechanical) is required with 8 or more years of industry experience in design of high-volume plastic injection molded parts.

Demonstrated ability to understand the design and development of plastic components, insert/over molded parts and assemblies.

Possess working knowledge of injection molding process, plastic resins such as nylon, polycarbonate, PVC.

Must possess hands-on experience in 3D modeling; Pro E/Creo is highly preferred.

Experience researching, evaluating, and selecting plastic resins for specific designs.

Able to travel up to 10% primarily domestically.

Candidates must already have a work authorization that allows them to work for ABB in United States Experience with simulation/analysis software like LS-DYNA, ANSYS and/or MoldFlow is a plus.

Experience in project management including, planning, scheduling, assigning actions/tasks, and setting deliverables, and time completion commitments desirable
