This position is eligible to be based from a variety of locations, including full-time remote.

Summary:

Surfline is a growing tech and media company dedicated to building products to help people play outdoors.

We’re seeking a positive, business-minded Product and Commercial Counsel to work closely with our VP of Legal.

As Surfline’s second legal hire, this is a broad, interesting role, that requires rolling up your sleeves to get things done in a fast-paced environment.

Legal & Business Affairs sits within Surfline Operations and is Surfline’s dedicated in-house legal consultant, thought partner, and all-around advisor.

We help Surfline make better decisions, understand and manage risks, and creatively navigate challenges, both external and internal.

We partner with Surfline team members across the company on a wide array of matters, including privacy, product, IP, commercial transactions, corporate governance, employment, acquisitions, business development, litigation, and many more.

As an entrepreneurial attorney on this team, you will help Surfline grow by supporting its corporate efforts, legal operations, products, commercial transactions, and compliance.

You will deeply learn Surfline’s corporate processes, commercial framework, and product lines, and be integral to growth and compliance across our global business.
What You’ll Do:
Structure, draft, negotiate, and review various kinds of commercial agreements, including sophisticated and innovative ones.
Provide legal advice to teams from Engineering, Product, Advertising, Marketing and others from the initial stages of product development to launch and beyond.
Monitor and advise compliance with US and international laws and regulations ranging from intellectual property, privacy, content regulation, advertising, travel and e-commerce.
Develop and maintain a repository of legal resources that are required for products, such as terms of service, privacy notices and other disclosures.
Respond promptly to a wide range of legal requests across the business.
Support an exciting business that often has tight deadlines (while providing diligent, detailed work product) and collaborate with legal, operations, and finance on cross-functional legal matters.
Help scale the legal organization by developing innovative processes to support the fast-moving business teams.
Develop and implement solutions to scale legal operations, including contracting processes, such as implementing a contract management system.
Ready to jump in and learn and support other legal requests across the business
– whether that be employment, governance, insurance, or otherwise!
What We’re Looking For:
JD degree
3+ years of attorney-level experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department.
Membership in at least one state bar
Ability to identify and solve for potential legal and business issues present in commercial contracts, product lines, and other business verticals.
Clear, concise communication skills as you collaborate and negotiate with internal and external business and legal teams.
Team approach, pitching in wherever needed, whether or not it fits your role or expertise.
Adaptable, curious, with a passion for improving the lives of our users.
Low ego, high integrity
– you take your work seriously, but not yourself.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work both collaboratively and independently, strategically and with excellent judgment.
Interest in technology, products, and corporate processes.
You May Also Have:
Experience advising product teams.
Experience with commercial contracts and building legal processes.
Experience advising on domestic and global privacy issues and in-house experience or law firm experience counseling clients on privacy matters.
