THE POSITION
Acts as the authorized agent of prescribers to processes prescription refills, insurance prior authorizations, and perform other billing-related tasks. Trained in all aspects of filling and refilling prescriptions, prescription insurance billing, and legal requirements within the scope of practice outlined by the Board of Pharmacy and third party payers. Interacts with patients and provides excellent customer service to help coordinate medication access and care for patients.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned.)
- Use web-based software, telephone, and fax to select appropriate forms, submit, and follow up on prior authorizations.
- Extract necessary diagnosis codes, lab values, medication history, and progress notes from electronic medical records for inclusion in prior authorization submission.
- Track progress and follow-up on all initiated prior authorizations.
- Solve billing discrepancies and issues as appropriate.
- Answer phone calls, return calls to patients, maintain voicemail.
- Engage patients in medical care by calling to remind patients to schedule follow-up appointments, labs, and annual exams.
- Monitor and respond to requests in the eRx and fax queues in AllScripts
- Collaborates with Providers, Pharmacy staff, and Case Managers regarding patient care, refill requests, prescription clarifications, alternate therapies, and prior authorization information.
- Follow up and expedite requests as necessary using interdepartmental communication.
- Participates in ongoing learning opportunities.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Works with other MHF departments as appropriate to promote exceptional integrated patient care.
- Interface with the Director of Pharmacy Operations to ensure quality and compliance.
- Attend meetings required for position (ie. Department meetings, all-staff meetings, multi-disciplinary team meetings).
- Participate in annual OSHA training, HIPPA training and URAC training.
- Maintain a level of professionalism and leadership that reflect the high standards of care we strive to provide at MHF.
- Determine most effective use of resources in a cost-controlled setting and provide input into Continuous Quality Management.
- Uphold all principles of confidentiality and patient care to the fullest extent.
- Adhere to all professional and ethical behavior standards of the healthcare industry.
- Interact in an honest, trustworthy, professional, and respectful manner with patients, employees, visitors and vendors.
- Other duties may be assigned, are required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Pharmacy and prior authorization experience.
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree.
- Valid Pharmacy Technician license from CA Board of Pharmacy (preferred not required)
- Basic operation of a computer workstation, electronic medical record, and pharmacy computer system.
- Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
- Able to speak Spanish preferred, but not required.
COMPANY REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to pass a background check to include a 7-year criminal, 10-year SSN & employer history reference check.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Must be able to work flexible schedules.
- Must take yearly flu shot or wear flu mask during flu season for patient facing positions and test for tuberculosis as required by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
- Must complete Covid-19 Vaccination series
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Must be able to read, write and speak the English language fluently. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Must have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public in person.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as dollar totals, monetary conversions, discounts, interest, fractions, decimals, percentages, area, and volume.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve technical and practical problems and deal with a variety of intangibles in situations where only limited communication, support, information and access exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Must have good computer skills and be proficient in the use of systems to complete correspondence, documents, spreadsheets and presentations, such as Microsoft Outlook and Office; Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat.
