Lab Assistant II – Head & Neck Surgery

Responsibilities

You will perform duties of Lab Assistant in the Vestibular Neuroscience Laboratory engaged in research in mechanisms of head
movement coding by the peripheral vestibular epithelia.

Specific tasks include a variety of laboratory procedures in cell
biology and morphology including immunohistochemistry, quantitative image analysis, tract-tracing, and reconstruction.

In addition, you will assist the PI and postdoctoral investigators in behavioral analyses, electrophysiologic recording
and data analyses, and surgical procedures.

Management of laboratory includes inventory control, supply ordering,
preparation of general laboratory solutions.

There will be ample opportunity to assist in undergraduate research projects,
as well.

Work is assigned and reviewed on an as needed basis.

This position works independently, receiving general direction and
training from the PI and postdoctoral scholars.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Biology, Neuroscience, Physiological Sciences, or similar

Skill in preparing standard laboratory solutions, buffers and histological reagents
Skill in preparing inner ear tissue specimens for investigations
Ability to maintain a laboratory notebook with documentation of experiments and results
Ability to rigorously follow laboratory protocols
Proficiency in performing general lab maintenance
Knowledge of regulations for proper animal care and euthanasia
Knowledge of safety measures in handling and disposal of laboratory waste
Skill in organization and ability to work independently
Ability to communicate and maintain notes in English
Ability to modify and learn new techniques as required
Ability to work with Macintosh and PC operating systems
Working knowledge of major software applications including Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint), graphics programs (Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator), web search engines (e.g.

PubMed), reference managers (Endnote) and e-mail
