What we are looking for:
MasterClass is seeking an attorney to join our expanding legal team to support our marketing and content teams.
You will provide legal and business advice on our marketing and content initiatives and programs; review marketing communications, consumer and business-to-business advertising, and creative; counsel teams on many legal and business issues, including intellectual property, technology and digital media issues; and structure, draft and negotiate production, talent, marketing and other commercial agreements.
The right candidate will have excellent interpersonal and project management skills, good judgment, and the ability to excel in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities of the role:
Act as a primary point of contact for all MasterClass marketing initiatives and programs, including reviewing marketing creative, communications and content, drafting rules and FAQs, and developing standards and disclosures for consumer touchpoints Draft and negotiate a broad range of agreements, including co-promotion, partnership, content distribution, vendor, agency, talent/influencer, and advertising agreements Advise on creative for compliance and intellectual property issues, including media / content rights, and any required clearances or talent releases Remain up-to-date on relevant industry, consumer protection, advertising, IP, and privacy laws and regulations Educate and train the organization on legal aspects of marketing, advertising, content & social media.
Work closely with cross-functional partners as a trusted business partner to achieve business outcomes without taking on unreasonable risks Formulate legal policy and processes across the organization
Requirements:
At least 7 years of relevant legal experience (preference for in-house experience focused on complex marketing and content related transactions and initiatives at a technology, education, or media company with consumer-facing products) Significant experience with applicable legal and regulatory landscape, including advertising/FTC, consumer protection, intellectual property, Internet, entertainment, licensing and contract law Strong understanding of content creation, technology, media distribution, and social media Ability to provide pragmatic, business-oriented legal advice, work effectively cross-functionally to drive to results, and guide stakeholders on approval processes, policies, and procedures Ability to work proactively, independently and reliably under tight time frames in a startup environment Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school, and membership in one state bar or equivalent and the ability to practice in California Work full-time in our San Francisco or Los Angeles office Legally eligible to work in the United States
