Job Summary
The Getty Research Institute (GRI) Scholars Program and Getty Villa Museum seek a two-year limited-term Research Associate II. The position works with Villa scholars, especially those working under “The Classical World in Context” themes at the Getty Villa, providing them with logistical and research assistance, securing library and other materials for the scholars’ research, facilitating meetings and lectures, and providing coordination with other GRI and Museum programs. This position additionally participates in programmatic projects related to important topics in the field of art history, archaeology, Classics, and related disciplines.
Major Job Responsibilities
• Organize and provide tours of facilities for visiting scholars or special guests as needed
• Facilitate meetings between scholars and other Getty Villa staff, including conservators, curators, education, and public programs, as well as relevant staff in other programs (GCI and Getty Foundation)
• Introduce visiting scholars to Villa staff with similar specialties
• Be available to answer scholar questions on-site and provide research assistance
• Facilitate meetings and social gatherings between Villa department heads and visiting scholars
• Work with Museum staff to facilitate scholar access to objects and collections at the Villa
• Work with Villa staff to facilitate symposia and panels of relevance to scholars
• Facilitate and organize tours of conservation labs, exhibitions, and the grounds and facilities
• Coordinate with Communications, Museum and GRI on advertisements and publicity for events and opportunities
• Serve as liaison between Villa scholars and other Museum and GRI Scholars
• Foster communication and partnership across departments and programs of the Getty Trust. Assist a network of local, national, and international contacts within the field of art history and antiquity
• Assist with programmatic projects related to topics in art history, archaeology, and related disciplines
• Act as main library contact for scholars and staff at the Villa
• Researches, presents and publishes own scholarship as time permits
Qualifications
• Ph.D. in art history, archaeology, Classics, or related field
• 0-2 year experience in academic setting, research institute, or art museum
• Fluency in at least one foreign language
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Demonstrated ability to build relationships, partner with and direct teams across disciplines
• Advanced research writing and editorial skills
• Ability to set and meet deadlines for oneself
