Core Facility Technical Director

The CSCB provides a unified research infrastructure for the single-cell research community, driving scientific discovery and advancement of pediatric patient care by harnessing the power of single-cell technologies.

These cutting-edge technologies enable us to generate single-cell-resolution data from hundreds to many thousands of cells isolated from normal and/or diseased tissues across space and time.

The CSCB Service Core will help researchers perform basic, translational, and clinical research on how genetics and environment affect biological function at the single cell level, and how these changes manifest into diseases at the whole body level and provide access to state-of-art single-cell assays at CHOP and the wider research community.

The CSCB Service Core Technical Director will take primary responsibility with the CSCB Director and Co-Director for leading the Core’s mission and strategic vision and overseeing all designated Core Facility activities.

In particular, the incumbent will be responsible for overall supervision of the Core Laboratory and manages the research staff and core laboratory operations.

Develops new experimental procedures and core lab services as needed.

Collaborates and interacts with other researchers within the institution and at other institutions.

Prepares laboratory progress reports, and laboratory budget plans.

Serves as resource person for research colleagues and a mentor for less experienced research personnel.

Works directly with the CSCB Director and Co-Director and the Director of the CHOP Research Institute Core Services to price service offerings in accordance with federal guidelines.

Job Responsibilities 1.

Responsible for all technical work performed.

• Develop, test, implement and evaluate new and creative approaches to meeting core lab and institutional goals.

• Initiate and appropriately respond to initiatives from others to establish and evaluate integrated systems to improve services that are supportive of the mission of the Research Institute and the Hospital
• Collaborates with researchers, external agencies and institutions to develop cooperative research initiatives
• Responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of services, programs, protocols, policies and procedures, and performance standards
• Participate in the collection and reviewing of data from institute-wide and specific departmental customer survey programs.

• Ensure that all the necessary remedial actions are taken and documented whenever significant deviation from laboratory’s established performance characteristics is identified and that test/sample/project results are reported only when the system is functioning properly.

• Ensure that consultation is available to the laboratory clients on matters relating to the quality and interpretation of the test results reported.

Directs all technical and non-technical personnel.

• Create and support an environment to foster teamwork, cooperation, respect and diversity.

• As a leader and role model, participate in professional and community activities on a routine basis.

• Provide direction regarding overall laboratory staffing and specific research projects
• Direct personnel efforts in achieving the strategic plan for the laboratory
• Monitor absenteeism and tardiness noting effects on other personnel and section operations.

• Responsible for hiring, counseling and termination of staff according to CHOP policies.

• Track annual performance reviews of staff.

Job Responsibilities (Continued) Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations Required Education and Experience Ph.D.

or M.D.

degree in genetics, genomics, cell biology, molecular biology or other related fields and at least five years of experience in genomics technologies.

Previous experience with single-cell analysis is a plus.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic Additional Technical Requirements Proficiency in the use of a wide variety of lab techniques, research equipment and research related software.

Proficiency with Information Systems used within the department.

Ability to handle confidential materials.

Ability to work the “bench” when necessary.

Communication, technical, and organizational skills.

Ability to handle and interpret data.
