About the Role:
Engineering managers at Condor are technical leaders who not only have the engineering
expertise to guide multiple projects at once, but who also manage a team of engineers. As an
engineering manager, you’ll own the engineering roadmap, strategy, and process, while also
providing the career development support that comes with having direct reports. Engineering
managers at Condor handle the traditional management and long term direction for the team.
Being an engineering manager doesn’t mean any code though! You have the ability to roll up your
sleeves and code, review code, and coach other engineers to engineering best practices. And, in
collaboration with the tech leads, you’ll focus on technical architecture, system design, and
managing the near term goals of every squad.
Some of the gnarly technical challenges you will tackle: data extraction from complex source
files, data transformation, streamlining complex finance-driven logic, data visualization… the list
grows every day!
Your role and responsibilities are centered around the following axes:
- Effectiveness
- Takes ownership of the technical output and outcomes of the engineering team
- Sets the direction and bar for team output and process, owning all key team
touch points (sprint planning, kickoffs, retros, reviews) and task management
best practices (estimating, sprint goals, clear and prioritized technical backlog)
- Works closely with the Head of Product to establish the medium to long term
product strategy and operationalizes the engineering team around it
- Guides and vets system designs for the entire product, is able to write product or
system development code when needed
- Ability to clarify product and technical priorities for engineers to optimize team
performance
- Attitude
- Ability to focus deeply on technical architecture for engineering, but also
prioritizes cross-collaboration with product and design to ensure successful and
sustainable software implementation
- Champions a company-first mindset, stewarding Condor’s values, contributing to
all-hands, team meetings, and overall company culture
- Champions and collaborates to achieve high quality across the engineering team,
taking initiative to implement new ideas, best practices, and make other team
members successful
- Regularly seeks feedback from peers and leadership to constantly improve, and
shows up to 1:1s with prepared agenda and topics
- Leadership
- Is viewed as a major role model and leader in the organization not only because
of their expertise and sound judgment, but also because they live by and
champion Condor’s values
- Takes a teaching-first mindset to resolve technical problems– asks questions to
team members over giving them immediate solutions, and is thus sought out for
their technical and strategic guidance
- Creates a safe and inclusive environment where team members are able to
speak up freely in various settings
- Mentors their team in engineering excellence through code, PR and architecture
reviews, and provides feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines,
checking code, accuracy, testability, and efficiency)
- Takes ownership of each team member’s career development through weekly
1:1s, annual goal setting with regular check-in’s, and matching stretch goals with
appropriate opportunities
- Ensures project details are available for other stakeholders and engineers to view
- Coordinates regular check-ins with leadership and records regular progress in
writing
- Takes the lead as the hiring manager for new engineering roles, owning
recruiting, interviewing and onboarding
