Responsibilities
Under general supervision of the Director of Operations, in this role, you will be responsible for the direct day-to-day administration of the animal husbandry services of the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine, provide supervision and training for the employees in the animal technician series, coordinate para-veterinary activities, and manage the Vivarium facilities.
You will also prioritize and complete on-going tasks independently following established departmental guidelines, University policies, and federal, state, & local regulations.
The Director of Operations evaluates work periodically.
Qualifications
Required:
Working knowledge of the standards and guidelines of the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” to insure proper and humane husbandry is provided by subordinate staff.
Ability to effectively communicate with people of varying degrees of veterinary medical training, faculty and staff.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, peers, and subordinates.
Skill in motivating others, stimulating people to effective action.
Ability to perform effectively under conditions of fluctuating workloads and to set priorities which reflect the relative importance of job duties.
Skill in para veterinary procedures to coach and train staff to assist veterinarians and/or researchers.
Knowledge of and skill in animal husbandry including safety precautions to orient and train staff employees using AALAS manual & federal guidelines.
Knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing agents and their proper application to insure that a clean and healthful environment is maintained.
Ability to lift feed bags up to 50 lbs, to handle animals up to 100 lbs, and to push racks up to 300 lbs.
Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
AALAS Certification at LATG level and Minimum 4 years of supervisory experience.
Associate or Bachelor degree in related Animal Science.
Preferred:
Knowledge, skill, or ability in animal husbandry attested by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science or equivalent.
Skill in writing grammatically correct routine business correspondence, memos, etc.
Knowledge of University and department policies & procedures in order to effectively supervise, train, assess, and discipline staff.
Experience in Vivarium Supervisor role with minimum 6 to 12 direct reports.
