The Neuroscience Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a 21 bed unit dedicated to the care of patients in need of specialized nursing care at a critical point in their healthcare journey, where they are at high risk for clinical deterioration.
Progressive care, with lower nurse patient ratios, allows for frequent assessment, intervention, treatment and specialized monitoring.
The unit cares for pre and postoperative neurosurgical, neuro-medicine and stroke patients with complex needs using a team approach with nurses, charge nurse and patient care techs.
Bedside, central monitoring, and remote telemetry are standard for all PCU patients.
Many resources are available to nurses on this unit, including: Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Mananger, Assistant Nurse Managers and a Nurse Educator.
Additionally this nursing team collaborates with and are supported by a wide array of the multidisciplinary providers, physicians and pharmacists.
A specialized orientation is provided to prepare nurses to care for the neuroscience patient as well as training specific to Progressive Care.
Ongoing education and professional development is supported and encouraged.
Attention to nursing patients with the provision of excellent outcomes is what drives the work on this unit.
Overview Role Purpose Provides direct patient care to support the licensed professional nurses responsible for a team of patients to ensure a safe environment for patients by reducing risk of harm.
Collects vital information on the patient and reports such to the nursing team which contributes to the overall assessment of each patient and any changes to a patient’s condition.
Responsibilities Implements direct patient care under the supervision of the nurse, promoting patient and family centered care in a healing environment.
Administers or assists patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), performs vital signs, intake & output, fall and pressure ulcer prevention measures, urinary catheter care, phlebotomy, or point of care testing as requested.
Collects clinical data and information on patients, and reports changes in patient status to the nurse.
Assists nurse with patient and family education.
Documents all patient care activities provided with correct medical terminology.
Acts as 1:1 patient safety sitter as necessary.
Ensures availability of supplies and equipment to meet each patient’s needs.
Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance.
Participates in professional development.
