DEPARTMENTAL SUMMARY: The Clinical Practice & Professional Development (CPPD) Department, at St. Charles Health System, is a system service department that provides clinical practice support and professional development opportunities to nursing and allied health caregivers at St. Charles Health System. CPPD also provides professional development opportunities to caregivers employed in non-clinical positions at St. Charles Health System and the Central Oregon/Pacific Northwest Communities. 

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Clinical Education Specialist, influences professional competence and supports the growth of clinicians along the learning continuum.  They promote nursing and allied health professional development and clinical practice scope guidance and competency through a matrix of roles including: learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, champion for scientific inquiry, educator, advocate, consultant and researcher to support the organization in the protection of the public, provision of quality care and creation of a healthy work environment in the perioperative areas. The professional development practitioner uses knowledge of adult learner principles, systems theory, and change management to support elevation of competent practice across the specialty enterprise using the professional development model adopted by St Charles Health System from the Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) Scope and Standards of Practice, 2016. The Professional Development specialist manages complex educational and practice programs/projects that require strong program management skills, including effective facilitation of cross-functional teams and strong leadership relationship development skills, to drive improvements in clinical and professional role performance, patient care quality, cost and satisfaction outcomes among patients, families, and health care providers.

This position collaborates closely within perioperative services leadership and unit based nurse educators and may be asked to review and provide feedback on the work of other caregivers.     This position does not directly manage other caregivers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

The essential functions as it relates to the Professional Development Certified Educator includes the roles of educator, leader, consultant, learning facilitator, and change agent are:

ONBOARDING/ORIENTATION

Develops a comprehensive strategy for orientation and onboarding of perioperative nursing staff consistent with the goals of the Nursing Division and the St Charles enterprise. Develops and coordinates service area professional practice caregivers to support the ongoing cohesive education strategies and competency management. 

COMPETENCY MANAGEMENT

Develops, implements, evaluates, in collaboration with leadership and key stakeholders, a strategy for ongoing clinical and nonclinical competence for service area caregivers including education, support, and compliance with practice standards, legislative and regulatory requirements.  . 

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Collaborates with CPPD and leadership to establish norms, standards and protocols that enhance organizational development and teamwork that support the goals and strategic imperatives of nursing and the health system.

EDUCATION
Leads and guides the planning, implementation and maintenance of an ongoing program of professional development and education for the service area with an understanding of current nursing theory and practice. Coordinates, assesses, monitors and communicates the orientation, ongoing education needs of professional nurses. 

Designs policies and practices to ensure needs assessments are conducted in a timely and meaningful way.   Ensures programs are development and implements in alignment with the identified needs.

COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS

Facilities work groups, teams and groups to identify systems or process issues and develop resolution recommendations.

Builds and maintains collegial relationships with interdisciplinary personnel to promote collaboration.

RESEARCH/EBP/QI

Provides leadership and supports initiative and organizational changes by developing and implementation scientific inquiry activities and improve outcomes. Identifies, proposes and implements clinical initiatives or program changes to advance nursing practice, improve the quality of care, or improve efficiency of operations

EDUCATION                  

Required:    Masters in Nursing from an accredited college or university.

Preferred:    Degree or Certificate in Nursing Education

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

Required:  Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Oregon by the OR State Board of Nursing. ANPD specialty certification on hire or within one year

CPAN or CNOR within 6 months of hire.

Valid Oregon driver’s license and ability to meet St. Charles Health System driving requirements.

Current certification in Healthcare Provider BLS within 1 year of hire.

ACLS within 1 year of hire.
PALS within 1 year of hire.

Preferred: Specialty certification such as CNOR, ASPAN, CCRN, CEN

Current certification AHA BLS/ACLS/PALS instructor within 1 year of hire.

           

EXPERIENCE

Required: 5 years of progressively responsible acute care nursing experience

2 years as a Nurse Educator at unit or hospital system level.

Preferred:  Experience in PreOp, OR, PACU, Program management

Experience with various teaching methodologies, accrediting bodies for nursing excellence (ANCC), shared governance, clinical professional advancement systems.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
