The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System is recruiting an experienced Board Certified Anesthesiologist to lead the Anesthesiology Department as Chief and supervise a multi-disciplinary team of clinical providers. The Anesthesia Department includes Chronic Pain Management Clinic and provides anesthesia-related direct patient care in all functional areas of the OR, PACU, Specialty Procedure Clinics, and Outpatient Clinic setting. The Chief of Anesthesiology will report directly to the Director of Surgical and Perioperative Care and is accountable to provide the most effective delivery of anesthetic care throughout the medical center in compliance with VA and VHA Directives and The Joint Commission accreditation standards. The incumbent serves as an Anesthesiologist within the Anesthesia Department. The incumbent is responsible for providing anesthesia service in and out of the operating room suite. Furthermore, the incumbent is responsible for all assigned clinical, educational, and administrative duties and requirements. The incumbent is encouraged to develop research opportunities and is expected to promote and provide educational endeavors for residents and staff as well as participate in a variety of meetings. The duties and responsibilities of the incumbent include but are not limited to the following: Develop policies and guidelines relating to anesthesia providers and administration of anesthesia. Recommend privileges for anesthesiologists and CRNAs. Discuss anesthesia events and document in Surgical Invasive Procedure Review Committee (SIPRC) meetings. Recommend to administration and medical staff the type and amount of equipment that is needed for administering anesthesia and analgesia. Develop anesthesia safety rules that follow regulations and standards regarding the safe administration of anesthetics. Establish a program of continuing evaluation for staff CRNA and anesthesiologists. Be available for consultation regarding the scheduling of patients for surgery relating to time and place of surgery if a conflict in scheduling occurs. Be responsible for the overall policy of airway intubation procedures at GLA. The Chief of Anesthesia will also ensure that all anesthesia providers will: Act as consultants in the management of problems in acute and chronic respiratory disease or as a consultant regarding other diagnostic and therapeutic measures related to hospital patient care when requested by medical or surgical staff. Be readily available during normal working hours to provide care for the immediate diagnosis and treatment of both emergent and non-emergent situations that may occur in the operating room, PACU or other locations within the hospital. Be able to be recalled to the hospital within 60 minutes when on duty after hours to provide necessary care for the diagnosis and treatment of emergencies that may arise. Participate in Surgical and Perioperative Careline meetings, surgical service’s staff meetings, SIPRC and Blood Transfusion Committee meetings. See that all anesthesia equipment is in constant readiness and cleaned in accordance with hospital policy and CDC guidelines. Prepare drugs properly for use in anesthesia administration. Conduct pre-operative visits to patients and write pre-operative evaluation. Write pre-operative orders as needed. Re-evaluate patient prior to the induction of anesthesia. This may include re-evaluation of neurological, pulmonary and cardiac status. Supervise post-operative care of patients in the PACU. Be available for anesthesia service upon request from other departments. Attend in-service and continuing education programs. Assist in in-service educational programs regarding anesthesia care. Participate in Quality Assurance activities which will include: (1) Morbidity and Mortality reports submitted to Quality Management; (2) Analysis of data for trends/patterns in the quality of anesthesia care; (3) Participate in ongoing evaluation of anesthesia care. Ensure medication security at all times. Assist in resuscitative procedures such as cardiac arrest or respiratory problems as needed. Assist in the Medical Center’s educational program of medical and paramedical personnel in the field of CPR and other problems which may occur and in which the anesthesia personnel are trained. Assist in in-service educational programs regarding anesthesia care. Ensure that anesthesia safety regulations and procedures and infection control policies and procedures are observed. 3. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The candidate will work under the supervision of and report to the Director of Surgical and Perioperative Care. The Chief of Anesthesia outlines assignment parameters, deadlines, and priorities and provides advice on how to proceed when unusual problems are encountered. The Chief of Anesthesia reviews the work product for technical soundness and conformity to policy and established requirements. Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday 6:30am to 3:00pm, 7:00am to 3:30pm, or 7:30am to 4:00pm, (May be required to work evenings or weekends as a 24/7 Full-Time Physician)
