Position Description

This position offers an exciting opportunity to build a career in clinical pathology at a large reference laboratory with possible continuation in anatomic pathology, or to enter a new phase of one’s practice of pathology.

This position’s primary responsibility will be to provide medical leadership over various clinical specialties (including chemistry hematology, immunology, toxicology, molecular testing) in the setting of a large, modern, and high-throughput laboratory system.  The position provides excellent opportunities to participate in regional and local laboratory administration, and employ the latest technologies used in assay development, quality control, with frequent opportunities to engage with the medical community to support patient care.

The Associate Medical director reports to and works closely with the Regional Laboratory Director to oversee operations in the West Hills laboratory itself and the multiple laboratories in the West Region of Quest Diagnostics. 

Responsibilities

This position will help to drive the quality of testing at the West Hills laboratory and in the West Region, and to represent the laboratory with its customers and the medical community.

This effort will include evaluating analytical testing trends, implementing new test offerings, reviewing laboratory validations, and improving upon Standard Operating Procedures.  The candidate will be highly visible to laboratory staff as they oversee the medical quality of testing and aid in problem solving various technical issues.

The Associate Medical Director will also share responsibility of serving as a consultant to inquiring physicians regarding tests and testing strategies, and answer calls from managed care and IPA organizations, as well as regulatory agencies.  It is expected that 5-10% of the Associate Medical Director’s time will be spent visiting local clients and other Quest sites.

Minimum Qualifications

All applicants under consideration must have a M.D.

or D.O., Board Certification in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology or Clinical Pathology, and an unrestricted California State Medical License (or have the ability to obtain one).   

Preferred Qualifications

They should have experience and superior knowledge of all aspects of Clinical Pathology, preferably with specific expertise in Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics and/or Toxicology, and experience handling regulatory issues, including working with CAP, CLIA, and the state and local Public Health Departments.

Candidates should have strong leadership skills, a high level of professionalism and communication and management skills.

Proven experience with organizational savvy to partner with all levels of an organization from front-line to senior leadership is important as this role will interface with corporate matrix teams, Quest clients and customers seamlessly.

In this position, the successful candidate works effectively in a team environment, and can interact seamlessly and productively with colleagues while providing clinical leadership, and medical expertise.

The candidate will have exceptional interpersonal skills, oral and written communications skills, and have ability to influence key stakeholders both internally and externally.
