As part of the Boeing Defense, Space and Security, Autonomous Systems division; the Gigabit Ethernet Data Multiplex System (GEDMS) program is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer (Architecture Design) to help the Lead Network System Engineer perform network technology activities. This person will apply network technology skills and experience to help analyze system needs/requirements, evaluate architectural and design alternatives, define and prototype solutions, configure, test and verify design function and performance for delivery to customers, and provide support to Boeing field engineers and customer in-service engineers as they deploy and integrate GEDMS across US and Foreign Navy labs and ships. This person will also assist in the performance of technical management and project planning; and assist with assigning tasking to and mentoring team members, and provide coordination of facilities and lab configuration/operation.

The GEDMS program, lead out of Huntington Beach, CA consists of geographically distributed team members.  The GEDMS team is responsible for the design and sustainment of a family of ship-wide network system variants that include equipment for ruggedized switching, routing, and message/signal processing. The system is designed for use on U.S. and foreign Navy ships.

The candidate will be instrumental in performing and managing high visibility tasks assigned by the US Navy customer, the System Engineering effort (requirements derivation, use cases, functional analysis, specifications dev., etc.) required to develop and evolve the next generation secure GEDMS architectures. The candidate will be responsible for providing Systems Engineering support for major shipboard design variants. In addition, responsibilities will include coordinating ongoing activities with internal and external team members and communicating with the customer

Position Responsibilities:

  • Architect, design, configure, implement, test and certify network devices (e.g., switches, routers, bridges, firewalls, VPNs…), protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, DHCPARP/RARP…), standards (e.g., IEEE, IETF, ISO, ITU…), and frameworks.
  • Evaluate customer and /operational needs to define and coordinate system network functional and performance requirements.
  • Perform analyses and trade studies to optimize total secure system network architecture, design and configurations.
  • Performs analyses for safety, reliability, maintainability, testability, human systems integration, system security, certification, and other specialties quality factors into a preferred configuration to ensure mission success.

This is a hybrid position that allows some telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options. This is at the hiring team’s discretion and could potentially change in the future.

This position requires an active U.S. Interim Secret or higher Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active).

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • Experience architecting, designing, configuring, implementing, testing and certifying network devices
  • Experience with network protocols, standards and frameworks
  • Experience with DoD secure real-time embedded network communications and control systems

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience communicating with technical personnel from multiple skill areas and functions to evaluate technical information and issues impacting design, production, and support of products, services, or other deliverables
  • Experience evaluating at the big picture and the inter-relationships of all positions and activities in the system, including the impact of changes in one area on another area
  • Experience in a role that required one to: collect, organize, synthesize, and analyze data; summarize findings; develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data sources
  • Experience evaluating customer and /operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces
  • Experience collaborating and coordinating across hardware, software, integration and test, quality, cybersecurity and production engineering disciplines to plan, architect, design, develop and verify system through product lifecycle including production and fielded system support
  • Experience developing, planning, organizing, implementing and monitoring of requirements management processes, tools, risk, issues, opportunity management and technology readiness assessment processes

Typical Education/ Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years’ related work experience, Master+7 years’ related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Summary Pay Range: $128,350- $173,650
