Below is a list of 20 of those states and what they require for your education and if there is an exam in getting a license in their state.

STATES/EXAMS CALIFORNIA: Exam is for new and existing Notaries.

Education that is required for new Notaries involves 6 hours.

For renewing Notaries, 3 hours.

COLORADO: Exam is for new Notaries only.

They must take an educational course.

CONNECTICUT: Exam involves an on commission application.

DELAWARE: Education is needed for electronic Notaries, including continuing education.

D.C.: Exam is a scheduled orientation session.

FLORIDA: Education involves 3 hours live or interactive.

For new Notaries only.

HAWAII: Yes, there is an exam.

LOUISIANA: This exam is for non-attorneys only.

MAINE: An on commission application.

MISSOURI: Education is required for new and renewing Notaries.

Online or written course.

MONTANA: Yes, there is an exam needed to be taken.

NEBRASKA: The exam in this state is open-book.

NEVADA: The education required is for both new and existing notaries who violate any provision of Chapter 240, NRS.

NEW YORK: Exam is required for new Notaries and Notaries whose commissions have lapsed by more than 6 months.

NORTH CAROLINA: There is an exam.

However, attorneys in this state are exempted from it.

New Notaries must take a 6-hour course (NC attorneys are exempted).

New education requirement for Notaries wishing to perform electronic notarizations.

OHIO: Yes, in most counties.

The type of exam, however, varies by county.

Education is not required by law, but it is offered in many counties as preparation for the exam.

OREGON: On commission application.

Education is 3 hours for new commission applicants.

PENNSYLVANIA: For current new Notaries
– 3 hours of live or interactive education.

UTAH: Yes, there is an exam.

WYOMING: The exam in this state is “encouraged, but not mandatory”.

THREE-STEP PROCESS IN BECOMING A NOTARY SIGNING AGENT: STEP 1: Click on the Notary Application tab on the homepage.

Then complete the Remote Notary Public Commission Application.

Some states require either a Notary State Bond and/or Errors of Omission Policy Insurance.

For existing notary applicants, your Notary Commission and State Bond and/or E&O must be active in the term.

STEP 2: Submit your application online.

A confirmation email will be sent once the application has been processed.

Call or email within 24 hours if changes to the application need to be made.

Then complete the online Notary Signing Agent Basic Webinar Training while your Notary Commission License/State Bond/E&O Policy is being processed.

Applicants will receive updates on their application status via email.

STEP 3: Email a photo of your Notary Commission License and State Bond to newcontractorsubmissions@gmail.com to receive any ordered notary supplies (Original Self-Inking Notary Stamp, Notary Journal Logbook, E & O Policy (if selected and purchased on application), and/or a Notary Seal Embosser.

SALARY RANGES Earning salary: $85.00 to $200.00 per loan signing appointment.

General notary work: $40.00
– $70.00 per signing.
