The Financial Controller carries out the financial and accounting functions of the Society and initiates fiscal policies and procedures as directed by the Chief Financial Officer and in collaboration with Director of Finance.

In this role, you would function as lead financial accounting professional within the Finance Department and maintain close contact with the managers of APS’ operating departments.

The APS has a “remote first” concept that promotes equal treatment and equal access, independent of physical work location, with a majority of staff working primarily from remote work locations.

Candidates located within a one hour commuting radius of the College Park Office are preferred, but consideration will be provided for candidates living in the eastern or central time zones.This position could require at times in office work, various geographic events and meeting attendance as instructed by your Supervisor.

Is This You:

Planning, directing and coordinating all operational accounting functions to support the monthly close process

Managing the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of consolidated business results including:
Coordinating and preparing internal and external financial statements

Preparing and/or reviewing month-end journal entries and account reconciliations

Coordinating activities of external auditors

Providing management with information vital to the decision-making process

Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes

Evaluating accounting and internal control systems

Evaluating the effectiveness of accounting software

Overseeing regulatory reporting including tax planning and compliance

Overseeing federal and private grant accounting and reporting

Hiring, training and retaining accounting staff, as applicable

Carries out other functions as assigned by the CFO and in collaboration with the Director of Finance

Scope and Relationships:

Manages at least three direct reports and has oversight for all members of the financial accounting team

Maintains contact with APS and unit officers, volunteers, and department managers to effectively coordinate financial, accounting and administrative functions

Maintains contact with financial personnel of AIP and other societies, auditors, banks, insurance agents, government agencies, vendors and the public

Maintains relationships with various software vendors and their help desk staff to serve as the first line of troubleshooting

Supports financial analysis for all APS business units
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration or related field.

CPA required.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Minimum of eight years of progressive financial managerial experience, preferable including experience with a not-for-profit organization

Excellent knowledge of accounting principles and practices

Knowledge of computerized financial systems

Knowledge of governmental rules and regulations as they apply to non-profit organizations

Strong organization, documentation, and prioritization skills

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Excellent attention to detail

Ability to adapt to quickly changing schedules

Ability to work well with interdepartmental teams as well as independently

Work Environment:

Most work performed in a remote first office environment

Will require at least monthly office visits for compliance and related activities

Incumbents may sit for long periods of time at a desk or computer terminal

Incumbents may use calculators, keyboards, telephone and other office equipment

Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required in completion of job responsibilities

Flexible work hours to accommodate the time differences for meetings and events as requested

Travel: This position could require at times in office work, various geographic events and meeting attendance as instructed by your Supervisor.
