In a time of incredible growth, Abode Communities has an exciting new role to add a Development Accountant to the Finance Division. Working under the direction of the Assistant Controller, the Development Accountant will be responsible for the preparation of loan draws and maintenance of all ledgers in the development or rehabilitation stage, until the property is placed in service and construction loans are paid off.

There is a high degree of independent performance in the assigned accounting and financial activities. Responsibilities include direct contact with Development Project Managers and other staff, lenders, contractors and vendors regarding invoices/billings, revenue and expenditure accounts, financial reporting system and development or construction related activities.

Primary Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Prepare, maintain and submit funding draws to numerous financial institutions for acquisition, predevelopment and construction phases of affordable housing projects;
  • Prepare, maintain and coordinate equity equivalent advances (EQ2) documentation support and funding involving acquisition, predevelopment and construction phases of affordable housing projects;
  • Track contractor and subcontractor conditional and unconditional lien releases prior to issuing payment;
  • Work with Development on draw funding; coordinate with the accounts payable staff timely payment processing of vendor invoices included in the draw request;
  • Verify and process deposits; review cash disbursements activities;
  • Prepare journal entries; review general ledger, and maintain/update certain balance sheet and income/expenses schedules. Reconcile monthly accounts receivables, accounts payable, cash to bank, and advances between Abode Communities and the development entity; reconcile loan draws with job cost detail report. Also reconcile job cost detail report to general ledger balances;
  • Prepare audit schedules and audit preparatory material for annual audits, and work with external auditors to deliver final audit reports before annual filing deadlines;
  • Special projects as designated by Assistant Controller, Controller, Chief Financial Officer or designee.

Equivalent Education, Experiences, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years’ experience in accounting, preferably with experience in real estate construction accounting, and multiple sets of books;
  • Expertise with computerized accounting systems, word processing and spreadsheet software programs such as MRI, AvidXchange, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
  • Must have and maintain a valid California driver’s license and auto insurance at all times and have the availability of an insured vehicle to travel within Abode Communities’ service area.

Compensation and Benefits

The target salary range for this role is $60,000 – $70,000; offers are commensurate with the education and experience of the finalist. Additionally, a full benefits package is offered which includes: health, dental and vision insurance, long term disability insurance, 401K plan, subsidized parking, paid vacation and sick leave benefits. Abode Communities’ corporate staff work on a 9/80 schedule allowing for every other Friday off.
