Controller

Our client, a Los Angeles-based real estate investment firm, is looking to add a Controller to its team. The Controller is responsible for all functions related to finance and accounting and reports directly to the President and Founder. This role will oversee all accounting staff, including Accounting Clerks (AC). The Controller also interacts with multiple outside parties, including accountants, appraisers, attorneys, banks, brokers, clients, contractors, lenders, tenants, and other vendors.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all accounting processes of the company, including all entities and individual assets.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain workflows with internal controls.
  • Perform daily accounting and bookkeeping activities, including the following: generate invoices and billing statements; receive checks, post receipts, and prepare deposits; review and post payable invoices; review and post tenant billing adjustments; review and post prepayment application to open charges; and update gross sales reports.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, general ledgers, subsidiary ledgers, budgets, cash flow projections, and job cost reports.
  • Reconcile, verify, and validate all entries and postings to balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Handle accounting for Founder’s individual investments.
  • Prepare contribution and distribution calculations, summaries, and notices.
  • Manage financial reporting; prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Calculate and process monthly management and accounting fees.
  • Audit and ensure accuracy of subsidiary reports and reconcile to general ledger (Rent Roll, AP Aging, AR Aging, Security Deposit Ledger).
  • Assist property management team with annual budgeting.
  • Ensure all accounts payable are paid timely.
  • Process accounts receivable for all individual assets and prepare aging reports.
  • Bank reconciliations.
  • Credit card reconciliations.
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system.
  • Manage company cash flows.
  • Review annual budgets, monitor for variances, and recommend areas of potential improvement.
  • Monitor and process loan payments.
  • Work with accountants on tax filings and audits.
  • Process payroll.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with concentration in accounting or finance.
  • 7+ years of proven experience in accounting.
  • Strong computer literacy, including solid Excel skills.
  • Proficient in Yardi is a plus.
  • Real estate industry experience is a plus, but not required.
