Director, Finance & Accounting -Nonprofit Industry

Controller (Full-time, Exempt)Summary: Reporting to the Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will be responsible for oversight and/or production of
all finance, accounting and reporting activities. The Controller is a management-level position and will be supporting reporting
to the board of directors, audit committee, agency management and will support the work of the senior leadership team.The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations of a nonprofit with complex program offerings and diverse funding
sources, including city, county, state, federal, corporate, and foundation funding exceeding $15 million. The Controller will
supervise a team of at least three staff members including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable,
accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration.The Controller will ensure the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation
and no-finding audits. The Controller will guide the education of program leaders and their staffs, not only regarding finance
and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.
Performance is reviewed on a continuous basis with specific goals and objectives identified throughout the year. This is a full-
time, exempt position.Duties / Responsibilities:
Accounting

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and

regulatory requirements, especially OMB guidelines;

  • Maintain – and recommend revisions as appropriate- the fiscal manual, cost allocation plan, internal controls, and

safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures;

  • Identify and address inefficiencies in practices, software, and work flows;
  • Manage organizational cash flow activity and forecasting; and
  • Track and report on current asset accounts, reserves accounts and lines of credit to ensure adequate liquidity,

advantageous use of funds and compliance with policies and investment guidelines.Finance

  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting to ensure that all allocated funds are expended as

planned and program resources are allocated beneficially;

  • Ensure expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program requirements, restrictions, and budgets

throughout the grant/fund period;

  • Consistently analyze financial data and clearly present regular financial reports and statements in an accurate and

timely manner; and

  • Monitor and communicate progress of actuals against agency and contract budgets and keep senior leadership

abreast of program and agency financial status.

Leadership

  • Leverage strengths of the current finance team members;
  • Help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach

optimal individual and organizational goals;

  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create

and promote a positive and supportive work environment.

  • Engaging with partners and management to maximize benefits.

  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.

Minimum Requirements / Qualifications:
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an experienced leader with a minimum of five years of accounting and finance
experience, ideally beginning in accounting and audit, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting
financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders. They will ideally have experience in a complex nonprofit
that has multiple programs.Specific requirements include:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of government funding requirements and multi-service nonprofits.
  • Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and

implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.

  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and

promote a positive and supportive work environment.

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to the Nonprofit’s mission; a proactive, hands-on

strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the CFO, the responsibility for finance.

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
