Chief Financial Officer

Want to challenge yourself at a high-growth scale up AND make a difference in the world?

A bit about us:

Hi, we’re Who Gives A Crap! We make eco-friendly toilet paper (as well as tissues and paper towels) and donate 50% of our profits to help build toilets for the 2 billion people in need.

We love doing good, and we happen to be exceptionally good at it too! To date, we’ve donated over AUD$8.3 million (roughly USD$5.9 million) to fund sanitation projects around the globe. We’ve grown quickly – selling directly to customers across three continents and have established a strong B2B business in Australia that’s expanding to the UK and US.

Our team is made up of over 100 amazing humans working out of Melbourne, Los Angeles, China, and Manila. We’re working hard to reach our ambitious goals and diversify our product range to ensure we can have the greatest impact possible – both for the planet and its people. With your help, we’re hoping to increase our annual donation 10-fold in the next couple of years and continue to make the most beautiful, eco-friendly goods around.

A bit about the role:

As our first ever Chief Financial Officer, you’ll be responsible for communicating and managing our current financial position whilst designing the future chapters of our growth. This work is all building towards us reaching our Big Hairy Audacious Goal of ensuring everyone in the world has access to a toilet by 2050, no biggy.

You’ll ensure the important things like our cashflow, P&L and financial reporting obligations are cared for by inspiring a team to manage the day-to-day whilst you look further ahead.

Reporting to our CEO, you’ll join a global Executive Team consisting of a Chief of Product & Purpose, VP of Growth & Strategy, VP of People & Culture and our VP of Supply Chain. You’ll provide direct mentorship to our Melbourne based Head of Finance who oversees a team including a Financial Controller, Accountant role (currently hiring!), Assistant Account and external bookkeeping support.

When we peer into our crystal ball, here’s some of the big pieces work you will champion:

Assume the roles of Chief Navigator, paving the way for success

  • We think truly great CFO’s look at things like systems and process, metrics and risk as ways to shape and design for growth. You do, too.
  • Your experience, combined with the talent of our existing team, will enable you to kick off some pretty big shifts in how we work, quickly. We don’t currently have an ERP but are keen and ready to launch with your leadership (and a friendly push to get it off the ground!).

Provide commercial insights that blow our minds

  • Your first 6 months in the business will not only provide opportunities for you to identify things that will impact performance today, but it will also give you the insights to unlock the next chapter of our scale up journey.
  • You’ll review our strategy decks, growth models and corporate structure and provide recommendations back that will elevate these significantly

Elevate our financial acumen so we’re all speaking spreadsheet

  • Through your leadership, you’ll support our finance team to take even more pride in their work and elevate communications around performance reporting.
  • At your six month mark, you’ll be able to provide P&L ownership and business partnering support for all functions, brands and markets to support accountability, autonomy and transparency.

Inspire high performance in numbers, mind and roll

  • Under your leadership, we have an engaged and motivated team who strive for excellence. There will be a fair few “oh wow, that’s cool!” moments from you as you get to know your team, and from them as they get to know you, too.
  • We’ll forget what life was like before your input to the Exec team and the partnerships you form. You’ll likely be the bearer of some tough home truths, the instigator of some privative ideas and a comrade exploring the unknowns. Expect lots of laughs along the way, we find them essential!

Let’s talk about you

You’ve worked within complex financial environments and your experience spans the globe, with a record of leading and working within distributed teams.

You’ve probably been there and done it before
You’ve been on the growth journey that we’re at the very start of and you bring a toolkit of modelling and analysis, experience in equity and debt financing, M&A and post-merger integration and you’ve ideally worked through an ERP implementation..

You see the forest, and the trees
You’re a strategic operator, zooming out to see the big picture but you never lose sight of the detail and what it will take to execute at an operational level.

You’re a roll model
Building high performing teams is your thing; you know how to attract and identify great talent and provide an environment where personal and professional development is a priority.

You’re a connector
Your superpower is your ability to enable growth whilst maintaining operational excellence through collaboration. You’re not afraid to roll up your sleeves but you know when the best outcomes will come from upskilling and empowering those around you.

You give a crap
We’re all here because we genuinely want to make the world a better place with our work, and we want you to want that too!

Why you should work with us

Every minute you spend working with us, you’re making a true difference. The more we grow, the bigger an impact we’ll have. We think that’s a pretty great perk, but we don’t stop there…

If you have a great idea, we’ll do everything we can to make it happen. This is the kind of role that will be hard to find anywhere else: you’ll work with an incredible bunch of passionate people to grow a fast-paced startup at a crucial point in its trajectory.

The job is also amazingly flexible, something we’re working hard to hold onto even as we grow quickly. We started the business remotely, and now have hubs in 4 cities around the world. While the Melbourne team spends a few days of the week together in our coworking space in Cremorne, you can also mix it up and work in your PJs from home or set up office at the beach. It’s up to you! And while we don’t have a Friday drinks cart (yet), you will get free toilet paper. A lot of it. And nothing beats that.

Lastly, you get to say the word ‘crap’ more than in any other job. Guaranteed.

This depends on your experience but just because we’re a social enterprise doesn’t mean you’ll get paid peanuts. Think chocolate covered macadamia nuts with some extra perks thrown in. In other words, we pay competitively and are determined to make this the best job you’ll ever have – you won’t ever want to leave!

On top of the normal perks, we also provide flexibility to take extra unpaid leave or travel while working, we provide a health insurance stipend, generous paid parental leave, a training and development budget and a whole lot of other stuff. And did we mention the free toilet paper?

Process

We thought we should let you in on how we’re tackling this recruitment process. We’re partnering with the amazing team at Mitchel Lake  to help us deliver a delightful and inclusive process and to ensure we appoint the perfect CFO for our team.

We’ll be reviewing applications frequently and plan to close this off to new applications from Sunday 28th February.

Ps. Did you make it to the end of this (very long) description and think “wow, this would be great but I wish the role also got to own XYZ”? That’s great! We’d love to hear more about your experience and aspirations and are open to broadening the scope if it feels right!

Yay! Thanks for reading all the way to the bottom of our (very lengthy) job ad. Aside from being a total toilet paper fanatic, what was it about this role that made you apply?  *

We’d love to learn a little more about the scale of growth you’ve experienced in your journey. Could you share the TL;DR of some of the steepest growth journeys you’ve navigated? What complexity did it involve?

We know the scale up journey can be a tough one. To truly enjoy it we know grit plays a big part in helping us push on. Tell us about a time where you’ve had to embrace grit to overcome adversity or push through challenges as you forged your career in this fast paced world?  *

Given what you now know about our journey, what do you see as the biggest challenges facing our business in the next 12 months?
