Director of Hydrogen Systems

nnWe are seeking a Director of Hydrogen Systems to join our rapidly growing team developing a state-of-the-art modular hydrogen capsule technology and a fuel cell-electric powertrain for the world’s first zero-emissions regional airliner.

As Director you will use your past experience building out major hydrogen systems, to lead, coordinate, and contribute to the design and implementation of our hydrogen system projects.nn nn n nn nn About the Role nn nn n nn Act as on-the-ground deputy for the Chief Technology Officer with respect to hydrogen systems development and certification activities.

Responsible for our gaseous and liquid hydrogen storage, transport, and filling systems from development through deployment.

Manage a team of hydrogen engineers tasked with the design and assembly of high-pressure composite vessels for gaseous hydrogen storage, and insulated cryogenic vessels for liquid hydrogen storage.

Work with hydrogen producers and transportation partners to develop liquid and gaseous hydrogen filling and transportation processes compatible with our proprietary hydrogen storage modules.

Interface with supply chain partners across the hydrogen storage, transportation, and filling value chain.

Collaborate with key partners to work through engineering integration, certification, and regulatory requirements.

Provide hydrogen systems subject matter and safety expertise through the generation of practices and principles and mentorship of staff.

Participate in system and hardware design and safety reviews.

nn n nn nn About You nn nn n nn Experience leading high-performing engineering teams in a dynamic, unstructured environment.

Maturity of leadership and management style.

Experience in the development of gaseous and/or liquid hydrogen storage, hydrogen fueling, hydrogen transportation, and/or hydrogen distribution systems.

Understanding of applicable regulations for hydrogen safety, storage, transport, and handling.

Demonstrated proficiency in systems thinking, e.g., ability to leverage how the system, environment, and operation will influence the design, manufacturability, and performance of equipment under consideration.

Ability to communicate clearly (written and orally) about technical subject matter with engineers and regulatory agencies.

Flexibility and responsiveness in a fast-paced, dynamic, small team environment.

Experience in aerospace is a plus but not required.

nn n nn nn About Us nn nn n nn nnUniversal Hydrogen’s mission is to fuel carbon-free flight, drastically reducing the climate impact of air travel.

The company is completing the hydrogen value chain by developing a fuel distribution network that transports liquid and gaseous hydrogen in specially-designed capsules over the existing intermodal freight network.

nn nn n nn nnOur capsules are filled at hydrogen production stations, transported in shipping containers as dry freight, loaded directly into the aircraft, then removed on landing once depleted.

This eliminates the need for new capital-intensive infrastructure for hydrogen transport, including at the airport.

For regional aircraft, the company is also producing a powertrain conversion kit that replaces an existing turbine engine with a fuel cell and electric motor.

These carbon-free aircraft will take flight in 2025.nn nn n nn nnWe strive for a culture that is empowered, collaborative, open, and human-centered, and yet driven to make green aviation a reality with a sense of urgency.

We encourage flexible work setups and are abiding by CDC and local health authority safety guidelines, but we are building physical products and expect our engineers to spend significant time on the shop floor.

Consequently, we expect our engineering employees to live within commuting distance of our facilities in Venice, CA and Hawthorne, CA.nn nn n nn nnWe offer a best-in-class compensation package which rewards individual and team performance, and promotes transparency and equitability.

This includes performance bonuses, significant equity participation for all salaried employees, along with employer-paid health insurance coverage, generous paid time off, a kid
– and pet-friendly office, and childcare benefits.

As we grow, we look forward to expanding the benefits we provide-and we’re always open to suggestions for what is important to you.

nn nn n nn nnWe view diversity both as a business and moral imperative, and we encourage candidates from all backgrounds, demographics, and walks of life to apply.

We want to make sure we evaluate all candidates fairly, so don’t hesitate to let us know how we can support a great recruitment process for you-whether that includes off-hours interview scheduling, captioning/transcription services, or other accommodations.nn
