The VMware Information Experience (IX) team is seeking an experienced technical writer to support the products in the VMware Tanzu portfolio including Tanzu Application Platform. For this position, you should demonstrate strong technical and writing skills, flexibility, and adaptability. As part of our highly collaborative team of technical writers, you will work with software developers, product managers, and engineering stakeholders to create technical documentation that helps our customers use our products to achieve their goals. You will: Work independently to create and revise existing technical content in a fast-paced, agile environment. Communicate highly complex technical concepts clearly and concisely. Write for a range of customers, including new and experienced operators, administrators, and developers. Work with peer reviewers, incorporating editorial feedback to ensure that VMware style and standards are appropriately observed in technical content and media. Use the VMware toolchain and source control tools to author and publish content. Research writing assignments using a variety of sources including trying out the feature, reviewing issues, code, and commit messages, and interviewing subject matter experts. Collaborate with developers, product managers, and other writers. Ensure compliance with documentation styles and standards. Write and publish world-class technical documentation using Markdown. Contribute to open-source projects used by developers and customers. Your enthusiasm and passion for providing high-quality technical content will have a direct impact on our documentation and on our customers’ experience with the product. Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing? Complete the onboarding tasks and tools training for producing VMware documentation, and for understanding the legacy documentation toolset from which we are migrating. Gain proficiency with the authoring tools as you progress through the training. Achieved proficiency with the authoring tools and assigned product areas. Successfully deliver documentation for the assigned product areas on time to quality. At 12 months you will independently deliver new and updated content for your assigned product features, and you will have: Developed a solid working relationship with your development and product management teams. Contributed your ideas for improving the customer’s experience with your writing team. The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis? Create content for experienced technical users (developers) as well as administrators and operators who deploy and maintain a large distributed software system. Collaborate with software developers, product managers, writers, information architects, quality engineers, user interface designers, and technical support engineers to develop and review information. Use Markdown and Git to author high-quality information on schedule. Incorporate customer feedback and suggested improvements into core content. Work with both open source and proprietary content, bringing both sources together for differing product goals. What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like? The technical writers report to an IX Manager as part of the Information Experience (IX) organization. For this role, you will work with other experienced writers to create documentation for multiple products. The technical writers work independently and coordinate their work with one another and with their development teams. One team member has the role of Lead writer and works with the team to ensure that consistent organization and content guidelines are defined. After onboarding and coming up to speed with our team and processes, you will be expected to take the Lead on several product documentation sets. Where is this role located? Remote: This role is fully remote, allowing you the flexibility to work from the location you feel most productive and comfortable.
