Responsibilities Under supervision of the Animal Resources Manager, provide technical and para-veterinary services.
Major duties include assisting in Breeding Colony Management, and providing veterinary support services.
Set up breeding pairs for Principal Investigators and arrange timed pregnancies.
Set up pans for breeding.
Check for plugs, confirm pregnancy.
Wean litters.
Collect tail and other specimens for investigators.
Assist Animal Health Technicians and veterinarians with follow-up checks, treatments and procedures if needed.
Update and maintain inventory sheets/breeding logs.
Perform euthanasia on animals using CO2 chambers.
Collect and organize information regarding rodent medicine and surgery at the request of the veterinarians.
Xerox or scan scientific articles or on-line information for rodent medicine library and place information in appropriate folder in network drive as requested.
Assist veterinarians with sample collection and lab request forms as needed.
Participate in GLP studies as needed.Qualifications Ability to communicate professionally and courteously on the phone, in person and by e-mail to a variety of people.Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with faculty and staff that have varying degrees of veterinary medical training.
Ability to complete tasks in an orderly and timely fashion.
Skill in cleaning lab and autoclaving instruments.
Ability to use or learn full capability of word processing software, e-mail, spreadsheets, the internet and other computer programs.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Ability to work accurately and with detail.
Associate or Bachelor degree in related field.
Ability to work as part of a team.
Ability to recognize and describe signs of clinical disease or injury in laboratory mice and rats.
Ability to effectively handle and restrain rats and mice.
Skill in writing clear and concise correspondence.
Knowledge of research animal facility.
Knowledge of rodent anatomy.
Ability to euthanize rats and mice using CO2 chambers.
Must be able to follow the procedures for euthanasia including the use of the CO2 chamber, as well as be able to ascertain that death has occurred.
Knowledge of appropriate labeling and disposal of the animals euthanized, including bio-hazardous animals.
Knowledge of and ability to accurately follow all SOPs associated with a GLP study, including required study procedures and GLP documentation procedures.
Knowledge of and the ability to apply the concept of contamination control practices including engineering, administrative, and procedural controls for the containment of pathogens, including disinfection, and waste handling methods appropriate for work in bio-containment animal facilities up to BSL2 level with BSL3 practices.UCLA is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
