Job Description:
The Resident Director will assist with developing residential programming to support residents with engagement opportunities in person, remotely, on and off campus. The position supports with departmental programming, social media management and supervises student programming staff.
The position supports Residence Life and Housing Services initiatives that promote the Athenian spirit and Wellness efforts at the University.
This role is a live-on 12 month position, that participates in on call duty response (including Summer/Thanksgiving/Winter break and other university holiday periods).
*Duties and Responsibilities: *
Personnel/Supervision
* Oversee evening and weekend programming efforts to support residential student to engage on and off campus.
* Recruit, hire, train and evaluate student programming employees or ambassadors.
* Assures staff compliance with university policies, procedures, standards and state and federal regulations including FERPA, Title IX, ADA and others as appropriate.
Housing Operations
* Support housing operations (including but not limited to assigning rooms, facilitating room changes, resolving roommate conflicts, work orders, coordinating check in/out, updating and distributing license agreements and assessing room condition and changes, as necessary).
* Collaborate with Facilities Management, Campus Security, Bon Appetit Dining Services, Campus Events; and other departments associated with the maintenance of the residence halls and student safety.
* Assist with development and distribution of room selection marketing and advertising.
Student Development
* Assist as needed with weekly CA staff meetings, and CA programming.
* Support an extensive CA training program (Fall CA-(2 weeks), Spring CA (2 days), and in-service training throughout the semester. Training will be coordinated with the Director of Residence Life, Assistant Director of Residence Life, and other professional staff.
* Support as needed with university Community Standards, Title IX, and Residence Life and Housing Services incident response, adjudication and resolutions processes by triaging incident reports, sending summons emails to students, meeting with students, and sending resolution letters. Counsel resident students on issues such as adjustment to college life and roommate mediation. Work closely with the Director or Assistant Director of RLHS on advising, discipline and policy issues. Maintain accurate records of student conduct appointments and outcomes.
* Under the leadership of the Director and Area Coordinator, assist with the MOUNT Programming model and develop programs and services that are in alignment with the university mission and values related to inclusive excellence.
* Collaborate with university offices and programs to listen to the needs of resident students and respond appropriately.
Crisis/Emergency/Risk Management
* Interact regularly with campus security on safety concerns and emergency situations.
* Share on-call (evening, weekend, holiday and university breaks) responsibilities with professional staff residing on campus. Make decisions in emergencies regarding safety, medical and security concerns, alerting the Director of Residence Life and/or Security when warranted.
* Assist with Residence Life Compliance of Title IX and Title II Federal regulations.
* Assist with compliance of the Higher Education Act regarding a broad range of federal requirements related to student safety and other matters assigned to residential campuses and facilities.
* Recommended updated CPR/First Aid/AED Certification, annual or as determined by university risk management (not required).
Campus Relations/Collaboration
* Increase avenues of communication with students by maintaining visibility, availability, and approachability.
* Initiate informal contact with resident students and serve as a resident student advocate to meet their needs.
* Present Residence Life and Housing Services information to parents and prospective students at Admitted Students Day, Open House, and Orientation.
Administrative Duties
* Support CA Selection process. This includes updating the application online, creating an advertising campaign each year, reviewing applications, coordinating interviews (individual and Group Process), and hiring for the following academic year.
* Manage assigned programming budget.
* Maintain case management load by utilizing Maxient to maintain thoroughness, accuracy and integrity of data and records.
* Assist with the maintenance of the Residence Life Department’s web page, myMSMU, Engage MSMU, and social media pages.
* Maintain appropriate membership and involvement in professional associations.
* Support departmental assessment efforts.
*Other Duties and Responsibilities: *
* Serve on committees and attend meetings (e.g., Student Affairs All Staff meetings, Emergency Response Team, Safety Committee, Parking Committee, Violence Prevention Task Force and Commencement Committee. Others as needed).
* Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
*Knowledge: *
* Strong working knowledge of student development theory, paraprofessional training trends and models, current residence life and housing issues, housing practices (e.g., key control, room selection, room assignments,) as well as student judicial models (restorative justice practices), ADA requirements and diversity issues as they relate to on-campus living.
* Computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Publisher, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, Outlook), Internet, web development, e-mail, desktop publishing, etc.
* Strong working knowledge of supervisory principles.
*Abilities and Skills:*
* Willingness and ability to live on campus and travel between two campuses and other university properties. Position requires the capacity to work in a 24-hour/7 day environment with the ability to quickly and accurately assess and respond to situations and individuals.
* Effectively organize, prioritize and handle multiple competing demands.
* Understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse university environment.
* Effectively relate to university students, both at a group and individual level.
* Effectively work and communicate with people from different ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds.
* Provide leadership and engage in effective problem resolution.
* Effective assessment of students’ developmental needs as well as the ability to relate and communicate effectively with students who live on campus, to ensure the resident’s needs are met and maintain the image of on-campus living as an asset that compliments the academic classroom experience.
* Excellent group facilitation, critical thinking/problem solving, mediation/conflict resolution, time management, leadership, interpersonal, counseling and supervisory skills.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
*Education: *
* Currently enrolled in a Master’s Level Graduate program preferred.
* Bachelor’s degree required.
*Experience: *
* Minimum two years of professional experience in housing/residential life.
* Demonstrated successful supervisory experience.
*Licenses and Certifications:*
* Recommended: First Aid, CPR, AED training current or willing to become and maintain currency.
