Pastry and Kitchen Shift Supervisor

The Pastry & Kitchen Shift Lead is a Non-Ministerial position.

Non-Ministerial staff who serve in operational and service support roles are not required to affirm Mount Hermon Association, Inc.’s (“MHA”) Christian mission, vision and beliefs.

However, they are expected in the course of their employment to respect, work in harmony with, and not undermine MHA’s Christian mission, vision and beliefs.

Non-Ministerial staff join into our community life of prayer, worship and spiritual activity, including but not limited to staff meetings, attendance at programs, Bible Study, and staff gatherings.

Position Objective The Pastry & Kitchen Shift Lead is responsible for planning, preparing and setting up bakery products for meals for any applicable MHA location and works in conjunction with Kitchen Supervisors to provide shift support in all areas of the kitchen as needed, and ensures food is presented to MHA guests in in a manner consistent with MHA’s mission, vision and values.

Key Job Accountabilities Prepare breads, rolls, muffins cookies, cakes and pastries according to the direction of the menus established and follows recipe guidelines.

Actively support in the preparation of other meals including pantry cold items and hot items.

Provide leadership and support to Kitchen Supervisors during shifts.

Direct all bakery and cooks assigned to shift to achieve and exceed expectation of quality execution.

Follow Booked Event Orders (“BEOs”), communicate efficiently with other departments, and follow master recipes to ensure MHA’s kitchen standards, correct quantity productions and reduce food waste.

Ensure all food handling practices are followed and maintain a clean and sanitized work area and working equipment.

Report product ordering needs in a timely manner to Director or Food Services and Purchasing personnel.

Train cooks and kitchen assistants in correct cooking techniques, sanitizing standards, presentation, serving and storage.

Assist in creating new recipes for special events with the guidance of the Executive Chef and Kitchen Supervisors.

Supervisory Responsibilities This position has direct supervisor responsibility over pastry cooks, cooks and kitchen assistants.

Education/Certifications/Licenses High School Graduate or Technical School/some college (preferred).

Culinary training, certificate or schooling (preferred).

Must have or be able to obtain a California Food Handler’s Card.

Work Experience Ideal candidate will have minimum 2 years’ kitchen supervisory experience.

1-3 years experience in Food Service is preferred.

Minimum of 1 year in high volume operations experience.

1 year of proven experience working in a bakery/pastry setting.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Basic computer skills required.

Demonstrated ability to lead teams.

Possess and maintain a gracious, calm and pleasant demeanor under pressure.

Excellent knife skills preferred.

Must have a working knowledge of menu development, recipe development, principles of cooking, presentation, portion control and costing.

Basic math skills required.

Excellent English speaking and writing skills.

Bilingual a plus.

Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.

Ability to work on rotation and weekends.

Physical Demands Requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.

Requires sitting, standing, squatting, stooping, twisting, with ability to lift/carry 50 lbs.

Additional Requirements Must agree to and comply with MHA’s employee driving guidelines for MHA-owned vehicles and personal vehicles for business purposes.

Adherence to company dress code and professional standards for personal grooming and appearance.

Satisfactory completion of background investigation, or valid work permit, as well as ability to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
