Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics is one of the nation’s premier health policy research centers.
Housed jointly in the School of Pharmacy and Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California (USC), its mission is to measurably improve value in health care through evidence-based policy solutions, research excellence, and private and public sector engagement.
The Center achieves this mission through groundbreaking research and policy analysis in health economics, health services research, and pharmaceutical economics.
The Schaeffer Center comprises approximately 100 faculty and staff who collaborate on a wide array of research and policy questions.
The Center’s External Affairs group supports a sophisticated dissemination strategy to ensure Schaeffer Center research informs health policy.
Through an ongoing collaboration with the Brookings Institution, the Schaeffer Center has developed an effective channel to disseminate its policy research in Washington DC.
Research staff (directors, administrators, specialists) together with media and communications experts all ensure that research projects are shepherded effectively.
The Center also supports a large programming staff and a data core with access to national survey data and large claims databases from public and private sources.
Position Description
The Schaeffer Center seeks an experienced Managing Director to oversee, direct and coordinate Center operations in support of its mission.
The position reports directly to the co-directors of the Schaeffer Center and is responsible for enabling leadership to work most effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
The Managing Director strategizes with Schaeffer Center leadership on institutional planning, program development, and problem resolution and ensures that implementation plans are effectively developed, communicated, managed, and executed.
The successful candidate will ensure streamlined activities within the organization based on the priorities of the Center’s leadership and provide critical, high-level support to optimize the co-directors’ time.
This is a 2-year (renewable) fixed term position.
Specific responsibilities include:
Oversee, direct, and coordinate the operations of the Center’s co-directors and leadership;
Ensure administrative activities are operating timely and efficiently;
Prioritize opportunities and resolve issues and requests referred to the Center’s co-directors and leadership;
Prepare for and support Center leadership meetings, including capturing major take-aways, working with leadership to ensure follow-up and appropriate and timely communication to participants, and monitoring progress and achievement of next steps;
Identify and analyze problems, weigh relevance and accuracy of information, generate and evaluate solutions, and make recommendations; and
Develop, manage, and maintain an effective internal communication program among the Center’s staff and other University partners and stakeholders.
Successful candidates are highly skilled organization leaders with executive academic management experience, excellent execution skills, and exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
The role requires a combination of focus and flexibility, as well as a willingness to play an active, behind-the-scenes role.
The position requires tact, diplomacy, persistence, self-motivation, and strong writing and analytical skills.
Additionally, the successful candidate will serve as an office manager, providing coordination and management of on-site administrative staff, space allocation and design, and standard operating procedures.
Qualifications
Applicants must have administrative management experience in a university or corporate environment.
Familiarity with health care and health policy issues preferred.
A Master’s degree and 7 years of experience required.
This is a full-time management position that requires strong organizational and managerial skills.
The candidate must have experience working with staff, managers, and directors.
The successful candidate will have:

Demonstrated ability to successfully prioritize requests and opportunities;

Familiarity with health policy, health care, and academic or policy research environments is highly desirable.
Compensation
Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Position is a FTE on a 2-year (renewable) fixed term.

Proven leadership/management experience, skilled in staff development and networking.
Ability to analyze and evaluate data, and present findings.
Proven experience with budget development and control.
Excellent interpersonal and written and oral communication skills, able to problem solve and lead conflict resolutions.
Ability to interpret and apply policies/analyses/trends.
