Manager, Human Factors Engineering

Our location in Sylmar, CA currently has an opportunity for a Manager, Human Factors Engineering.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Provide Human Factors (HF) support across the product lifecycle including user needs identification, development of user profiles, use environments, usage scenarios, task analysis, use error risk analysis, generation of hardware and software design concepts, user interface design, usability testing, validation test reports, and human factors engineering reports.

  • Work closely with marketing, research, engineering, quality, and regulatory to produce customer focused designs that not only meet user needs but also factor in business priorities and platform, architecture, and manufacturing constraints.

  • Creates detailed usability improvement concepts and lead design teams. Works across product lines to create and manage usability improvement plans and usability standards.

  • Define Human Factors project scope and timelines in partnership with project management.

  • Plans and conducts worldwide customer, competitive, and software industry research to identify and prioritize usability improvement possibilities and solutions.

  • Leads usability conceptual design development, usability research, interaction design, and usability validation on prototypes as well as finished product.

  • Leads and assists in the management of user manuals, online help, and training materials.

  • Provide Human Factors leadership mentoring and guiding junior engineers to meet their objectives and deliverables.

  • Organizes and manages work to deliver usability deliverables on programs; leads other human factors engineers or other external resources in the execution of assigned work.

  • Keep abreast of regulations and best practices for medical device human factors (e.g. IEC 62366, AAMI HE75, ISO 14971, MDR regulations, and the latest FDA guidance on applying human factors engineering) and advise management regarding potential improvements to internal processes and regulatory issues related to human factors engineering.

  • Creates and refines usability related processes, and trains others in their use.

  • Innovates within program work to improve the organization, solve technical challenges, and developing intellectual property (IP).

  • Prepares and makes presentations to appropriate program or functional teams and individuals as necessary.

  • Remains current on and develops expertise in developments in human factors engineering, applicable regulatory requirements and restrictions, and a general knowledge of the company’s products, markets, policies, and objectives as well as industry trends.  Stays abreast of current and novel human factors engineering practices through reviewing literature, trade journals, being active in relevant professional associations, and by attending conferences/seminars.  Communicates technical advancements to colleagues and associates.

  • Reviews project deliverables for feasibility, thoroughness, clarity, correctness, and accuracy. Reviews peer’s plans and protocols to ensure they meet human factors standards and processes.

  • Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING

Required

  • Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Human Factors, Usability Engineering or a related engineering field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant work experience in human factors/usability engineering.  

  • Requirements include an in-depth knowledge and experience of: human factors as well as cognitive psychology theory and application; the software development process, software technology, and effective methods of working with research & development teams; customers, trends, and emerging research and technologies affecting product usability.

  • Requires comprehensive written and verbal communication, interpersonal, facilitation, presentation, quantitative, analytical, organizational, and follow-up skills, the ability to meet deadlines on multiple projects as well as the ability to converse effectively with all levels of employees.

  • Strong analytical, problem solving skills.

  • Ability to interface with customers in a highly professional manner.

  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.

  • Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment.

  • Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects.

  • Strong negotiation, conflict management, and influence management skills.

  • Ability to travel approximately 20%, including internationally.

  • Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Preferred

  • Masters Degree or an advanced credential in human factors engineering, cognitive or experimental psychology, or in a field related to human-computer interaction.

  • Experience with the cardiac pacing and defibrillation device market is also highly desirable.

  • Experience with diverse technology platforms, including mobile applications.

  • Minimum 2 years or more experience as an engineering manager in a product development role is strongly preferred.

  • Fluent in medical procedure terminology.
