Labor Relations Director

MV Transportation is seeking a Labor Relations Director for the Southwest and Southern California regions. He/she will provide support, leadership and direction in all aspects of labor relations. This position is responsible for implementing strategies, programs, policies and procedures in compliance with provincial regulations, corporate and client policies that attract, retain, and advance employees to achieve the company’s strategic goals and objectives. This role supports multiple locations in region, and requires heavy travel. The ideal candidate must be available for about 80% travel in this role and reside in the Southwest or Southern California region of the US.

Responsibilities:

The following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the essential functions of the of Labor Relations Director position, but rather a general description of some of the requirements necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. The Labor Relations Director must be able to perform the following tasks, among others:

  • Develops and maintains a long-term, strategic labor relations plans in support of company’s initiatives and corporate goals
  • Resides as the expert in employment law and labor relations issues
  • Interprets and advises on employment-related legislation
  • Leads all labor relations activities including collective bargaining, grievance handling, arbitrations, mediations, and union avoidance strategies
  • Participates in and advises senior management regarding labor relations strategies and relationships
  • Provides advice to senior management on administration of the Collective Agreements
  • Consults with senior management on organizational design matters to ensure organization structure and positions support business objectives
  • Develops labor relations policies, procedures and manuals, as needed
  • Conducts daily, weekly and monthly reviews of key labor relations metrics and recommends strategies and solutions for improvements
  • Consults with the business development department to assist in labor relations strategies and issues with new business opportunities
  • Ensures the accuracy, confidential and safekeeping of personnel documents and records
  • All other duties as assigned

Talent Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent knowledge in labor relations
  • Minimum of seven (7) years management experience in a labor relations leadership role within a unionized work environment
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with an ability to influence people at all levels of the organization
  • Knowledge of all applicable provincial laws and regulations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of best in class labor relations programs
  • Highly organized with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while exceeding established goals and objectives
  • Analytical with a strong attention to detail
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to set clear expectations, coach, develop and motivate staff
  • Ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality
  • Ability to hold the respect and confidence of all employees
  • Ability to work independently and objectively
  • Ability to effectively delegate tasks and provide appropriate supervision and follow up to department staff
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software
  • Demonstrated ability to manage with a “Safety First” attitude
