Position Summary
Reporting to the Vice President of Nursing Services/ Assistant Chief Nursing Officer, the Sr.

Director of Perioperative and Perinatal Services has 24 hour accountability for the clinical practice of Nursing and the delivery of patient care and all operations within the Operating Room (OR), Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), the Sterile Processing Department (SPD), New Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC), and Maternal Child Health Departments (LDRP, Post-Partum and Nursery), including the identification and demonstration of abilities to meet special needs and considerations of Age and Population Specific awareness.

This role encompasses the effective and efficient management of human, fiscal and other resources, development of staff competency through assessment and education, compliance with regulatory and professional standards and strategic planning, improvement of quality, service levels, safety, and customer satisfaction and of collaborative relationships.

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Community Hospital.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Establishes operational plans for Perioperative and Perinatal Services based upon the Hospital’s mission and strategies.

Assesses the need for adequate space and resources to meet patient care needs and makes recommendations to the organization through
established channels.
Develops and monitors labor, supply and capital budgets; sets staffing and resource utilization parameters on a daily basis.

Evaluates FTE allotment and staff skill mix and uses productivity reports for long range staffing adjustments.

Makes recommendations for program/service changes to increase efficiency and appropriate use of fiscal resources.

Develops and prioritizes annual department budgets in line with the Hospital’s process, goals and targets based on projected volume/workload, expense dollars and revenue dollars.

Oversees the rental/purchase of supplies and equipment.

Monitors trial of new products and equipment.

Submits requests for new products through the Standards Committee.

Develops, revises or reviews all policies and procedures.

Has intimate knowledge of Perioperative and Perinatal Services policies and procedures and monitors staff compliance.

Operationalizes human resource policies to include behavioral interviewing, credentials compliance, orienting, evaluating, coaching / counseling, disciplining and terminating staff.

Implements a process to evaluate and improve staff competencies through education.

Develops and operationalizes the Quality and Performance Improvement Plans.

Responsible for the development and accountability of the Management Team that supports this role.

Monitors the quality and delivery of patient care during the pre-, intra
– and post-operative period for Perioperative.

Monitors the quality and delivery of patient care in the pre-, intra
– and post-delivery period; participates in care management activities for the Perinatal or Maternal Child Health Departments.

Develops and maintains a patient care environment that supports excellence in Nursing practice and patient care through planning and implementation of programs that support positive patient care outcomes.

Ensures age-specific and population specific awareness in patient/family care and interaction.

Organizes and directs work flow, solves intra and interdepartmental problems that inhibit work flow and quality, motivates employees to optimal performance, and serves as a resource to staff for clinical, ethical or systems issues.

Operationalizes environment of care plan to insure a safe, infection-free and efficient area for patients, visitors and employees.

Develops
department safety and disaster response plan in compliance with the Hospital’s plan.
Develops and uses a system to continuously evaluate and respond to customer concerns.

Assures that the Watson Model of Care is implemented in the Perioperative setting.

Participates with hospital and physician leadership in decision-making.

Acts as patient care liaison with the Medical Staff.

Fosters
multi-disciplinary integration of process improvement strategies.
Acts as a resource and has oversight of RNs and other staff in the Operating Room, PACU, LDRP, Post-Partum and Nursery and Sterile Processing Department with knowledge of critical assessment and monitoring of the patient – pre and post as applicable.

Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
Education Bachelor of Sciences degree in nursing; Master’s in Nursing, Business or related health field preferred.

Individuals without a Masters’ will be required to complete the degree within 2 years of their hire date.

Qualifications/Experience Minimum of five (5) years of clinical nursing experience in Perioperative nursing with regard to regulatory guidelines and standard of practice; minimum three (3) years management experience.

Previous oversite of perinatal or perinatal clinical experience preferred.

Current California Nursing license CNOR through AORN or certification in Perinatal Nursing preferred Special Skills/Knowledge Basic computer skills Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Current CPI (nonviolent Crisis Intervention) within 90 days of hire or notification of requirement
