Location 680 Lake Shore Drive Responsible for all Medical Center cash management activities, debt service payments, reporting of certain insurance claims, and various accounting and reporting functions.
Monitors and controls the flow of cash receipts and disbursements to meet the business and investment needs of the Medical Center.
Job Description Responsible for the Medical Center’s insurance activities including risk management initiatives, captive administration, marketing of insurance programs, renewals, claims management, managing certificates of insurance, reviewing contractual requirements, reporting functions and special projects as assigned.
Essential Job Functions: Manage the Medical Center’s commercial and self-insurance programs ensuring appropriate coverages and insurance limits while maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders across the Medical Center to identify and address risk exposure.
Develop and maintain a high-level knowledge of the Medical Center’s risks and insurance market trends.
Establish, develop and maintain relationships with Medical Center’s insurance brokers, captive managers.
actuaries and auditors, ensuring appropriate communication and sharing of required information amongst the working group.
Manage the annual insurance policy renewal process, including completing information requests and applications, participating in the selection of insurance brokers and carriers and related negotiations, and placing insurance coverage.
Support the Treasury and Risk management departments in marketing Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago risk to insurance markets around the world.
Review insurance requirements contained in contractual agreements in conjunction with the Legal Department to ensure proper insurance provisions and coverage.
Process all departmental requests for certificates of insurance as required to satisfy contractual obligations and ensure timely response.
File, process and resolve insurance claims in coordination with insurance carriers, Legal, Risk Management and other departments.
Ensure reporting requirements are met, including requirements from commercial insurers, the Medical Center’s captive insurance company and the State of Illinois Workers Compensation program.
Assist with the administration of the captive insurance company, including managing the captive’s annual financial audit, actuarial reviews and other regulatory requirements.
Coordinate with Risk Management department and Treasury Manager to ensure timely payment of claims and expenses from the Self-Insurance Trust.
Resolve insurance issues and requests for unique coverages from Medical Center staff.
Serves as principal contact for Accounting, Legal, Risk Management, Facilities, Information Technology, the Foundation and other departments regarding insurance issues.
Serve as an in-house consultant providing guidance to Medical Center departments on various risk and insurance related issues.
Support the administration of workers’ compensation benefits in conjunction with the employee health and legal departments.
Drafts periodic insurance updates for the Board of Directors and Senior Leadership.
Assists in training and education relating to insurance matters.
Leads various projects and collaborates on cross-functional initiatives.
Demonstrates confidence in own abilities even when working in unfamiliar areas.
The authority to hire, separate, promote, demote, write and administer performance evaluations.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Bachelor’s Degree required Minimum of 5/10 years of experience in insurance and risk management.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Powerpoint required.
Ability to work independently while seeking input from other parts of the organization or outside resources as needed.
Strong communication, project management, attention to detail and analytical skills required.
Must have excellent judgment, multi-tasking, and decision-making skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate complex issues in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
Previous experience with in-house insurance programs, academic medical centers, physician group practices, and/or health care delivery systems strongly preferred.
Practical, hands-on, collaborative approach to resolving issues.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and congenially with employees at diverse levels.
Decisiveness and ability to exercise good judgment under pressure; Collegiality and a sense of humor are valued.
