Summary
This position is located in Environmental Management Service line.

The Gardner is responsible for the appearance and maintenance of grounds, parking lots, parking garage and sidewalks.

The Gardner plans, designs, installs, repairs, maintains and operates power-driven equipment.

Responsibilities
* Planning and designing landscaping.
* Installing, repairing and maintaining sprinkler systems.
* Operating and maintaining various power-driven equipment such as gas operated sweepers, mowers, weed eaters and trimmers.
* Keeps grounds and areas around compactor clean.
* Plants trees, shrubs, succulents and performs a wide range of gardening duties and submits request for parts and material to accomplish duties.
* Maintains area of assignments daily, empties waste containers, removing debris from grounds, sidewalks, steps, smoking shelters, roads and parking areas including the parking garage.
* Must have knowledge of gardening practices and procedures of local climate.
* Determine when trees and shrubs have reached the proper stage for growth for trimming and pruning and removing diseased limbs or excess branches.
* Computes quantities of plants and other materials needed to landscape specified arears.
* Knows how to build a good soil base and consider seasonal schedules or projects in deciding how and when work will be accomplished.
* Will look for obvious plant diseases, plant insects, and unusual or poor plant growth and report these conditions to the Supervisor.
* Responsible for the appearance and maintenance of grounds parking lots, parking garages and sidewalks.
* Consults gardening and landscaping publications and catalogs for guidance regarding the characteristics of plants and grasses and their requirements for water, minerals, soil, mixture, and Sun etc.
* Makes independent judgements and establishes schedules for watering, mowing and trimming grounds.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met.

Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing carts and wheelbarrows, bending and stooping.

Occasionally climbs ladders and frequently lifts heavy objects.
