The Executive Director is responsible for providing leadership and management for Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, as well as serving as a senior manager within the chapter. Working in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and the Program Board of Trustees, the Executive Director will ensure success in program management, budget and fiscal oversight, supervision of employees, resource development/fundraising, marketing, board development, and general non-profit business operations.

Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times is a project of Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southern California (RMHCSC), whose mission is to provide comfort, care, and support to children and families in Southern California. To achieve its vision of creating a community where children and their families embrace life and healing with a sense of hope, enthusiasm, and joy, RMHCSC also operates six Ronald McDonald Houses (with a seventh house being built in West LA) and three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms in addition to our Camp program.

Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times provides free-of-charge, medically-supported, camp experiences for children with cancer and their families. The Camp gives the children a chance to live a more normal childhood while they are being treated for cancer, as well as while they navigate survivorship. Camp also provides critical support for siblings and parents who are equally impacted by the traumatic psychological impact of childhood cancer. Since it was founded in 1982, Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times has hosted thousands of campers from throughout Southern California, across the United States, and around the world. The Camp is supported by volunteer staff who hail from a diverse array of personal and professional backgrounds.

Camp’s administrative offices are located in Los Angeles and the 60-acre camp facility is located in the mountains of Riverside County. Funds are raised through individual gifts, grants, corporate contributions, special events, in-kind donations of goods and services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

Leadership, Management, and Administration

Contribute to and implement the RMHCSC strategic plan.

Participate as an active and contributing member of the RMHCSC Leadership Team.

Serve as a team leader for all assigned employees, building a cohesive and collaborative team. Prepare an annual budget for the program that aligns with the mission, strategic plan, and goals of RMHCSC.

Oversee the program’s financial performance with ongoing monitoring and planning of budgets, investments, and asset management.

Work with the Director of Finance and Administration to ensure the establishment, maintenance, and review of sound financial and risk management systems.

Work within the established RMHCSC Financial Policies and Procedures.

Demonstrate flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload. Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations especially as they pertain to nonprofit organizations.

Ensure that safety is a priority in everything we do, including regularly updating a business resumption plan (or emergency plan), operating and safety procedures as needed.

Provide a monthly, written, Executive Director’s Report to the CEO and at Trustee meetings.

Program Delivery Management

Ensure the delivery of outstanding programs and campsite operations that are consistent with Camp purpose statement, RMHCSC, and Global RMHC, ACA, and COCA standards.

Lead oversight and implementation of the program assessment plan and long-term goals.

Be physically present during Camp sessions to build relationships with staff, families, campers, and volunteers.

Provide support and oversite of Camp’s 60-acre facility in partnership with Camp’s Associate Executive Director

Lead campsite master building plan and facility development in partnership with Camp’s Associate Executive Director—which equates to multimillion capital campaign fundraising as each area of the plan is executed

Employee Management & Program Delivery

Identify, recruit, train, and develop a talented team of employees who can lead critical program functions.

Ensure proper hiring and termination procedures as required by law and oversee all coaching and counseling actions.

Provide excellent supervision, goal setting, and evaluation of all staff and volunteers.

Encourage staff and volunteer development and education.

Resource Development

Plan and implement all annual fundraising efforts directed towards and including individuals, organizational, foundation, corporate, and planned giving.

Develop and lead the RMHCSC donor advancement plan that encourages donors to consider increased levels of giving & leads to our formal major giving program.

Identify new funding opportunities and develop partnerships with stakeholders from within and outside of Camp and RMHCSC.

Direct and oversee special events in coordination with the Event Manager and volunteers. As the lead representative of the program, the Executive Director will also be called to speak and provide relevant messaging at public events such as the annual Walk for Kids, Camp’s gala, and gatherings such as Camp’s quarterly town hall meetings.

Work with the CEO and other Executive Directors to identify potential donors for chapter-wide initiatives, or in support of other chapter programs.

Provide leadership and support for any capital fundraising that may be required. Effectively engage board members in fundraising and development.

Oversee the development and maintenance of effective donor development and acknowledgment program.

Work within the established RMHCSC Gift Acceptance Policy.

Represent the company at social and corporate events in ways that strengthen the RMHCSC brand and communicate the Camp and RMHCSC’s message and mission.

Board Development:

Build a strong and effective local Board of Trustees that can help provide the necessary funding, talent, trusteeship, and support for the individual program.

Develop and support a board development strategy/plan that includes identification, recruitment, orientation, training, and evaluation of the local Board of Trustees (or other volunteer leadership team).

Work closely with the Board Chair to build an effective committee/task force structure that provides opportunities for active engagement by local trustees.

Partner with the Board Chair and executive committee in planning the agenda and materials for the Board meetings and the annual Board planning retreats.

Ensure proper succession planning for board positions and board leadership.

Marketing, PR, Communications and Partner Development

Develop and implement marketing timeline and communications plans, including a focus on Camp’s 40th anniversary in 2022.

Oversee and direct Camp’s social media presence and partnerships with influencers.

Ensure appropriate representation, as a spokesperson, to all stakeholders.

Oversee development of event programs, brochures, flyers, and all other publications.

Manage relations with media in partnership with McDonald’s Operators Association of Southern California public relations agency and other media partners.

Develop strong relationships with assigned McDonald’s Owners/Operators, Partner Hospitals, and other key stakeholders.

Other duties may also be assigned.

Education and Work Experience:

Bachelor’s degree with at least 7 to 10 years of experience in senior-level management.

Experience fundraising in a nonprofit organization and demonstrated success with a prior capital campaign. (Or relevant, transferable experience).

Executive Director-level experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:

Position requires proven organizational, communication (both written and oral), creative writing skills, interpersonal skills, and excellent presentation skills. Experience working with a diverse population, an understanding of the needs of our vulnerable clientele; computer skills: proficient in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word, experience with or ability to learn database work (Raiser’s Edge).

Positive attitude with a team-based approach to leadership. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other management staff, employees, and the general public; ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form.

Strong communication, presentation, project management, and organizational skills are a must. Established experience with development, sales, or sponsorship. Special events and cause-related marketing experience are a plus. Must be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, and be willing to work evenings/weekends as necessary.

Language Skills:

Read and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, board members, families, and the general public. The ability to speak Spanish is a plus.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as annual budget needs, discounts, interest, and commissions

Reasoning Ability:

Solve problems with a variety of concrete variables and limited standardization. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills:

Microsoft (Word, Outlook, and Excel), Raisers Edge, or similar fund development software
