Engineering Manager (Data & Analytics)

At Surfline Wavetrak, we do great work from anywhere. This ranges from our headquarters in Huntington Beach, CA, to across the globe. This position is eligible to be based from a variety of locations, including full-time remote.

Summary:

As the manager of the Analytics Engineering team, you’ll own Surfline’s data and analytics platforms assuring that every department has the data they need to answer questions quickly. You and your team are responsible for providing the data for our key initiatives. This team sits within the engineering department and is partnered with our Business Strategy team to provide the analytics capabilities for the entire organization. You’ll leverage our data stack to help teams throughout the organization through a multitude of ways (new feature development, performance, decision making, A/B testings and more), have a hand in shaping a new data stack, and improve data operations. Our analytics stack currently includes: Segment, Stitch, Redshift, dbt, Airflow, Singer.io, Periscope, Amplitude, and few other tools.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead data warehouse, data lake, streaming data ingestion and business intelligence solutions
  • Manage and administer all aspects of the data lake/warehouse, ETL/ELT pipeline, and reporting environments, including architecture, design, development, automation, and DevOps functions
  • Understand how engineers are implementing tracking events on various clients, so that there is undeniable consistency in our data and analytics 
  • Manage a team of 2-5 analytics engineers at all levels 
  • Grow, develop and lead a high performing team while assuring a strong focus on relationship building and amazing their stakeholders
  • Be the technical point of contact for data and analytics systems, tooling and integrations
  • Ensure the team is writing efficient, clean, readable, fast, testable, documented, code and systems
  • Smoothly and successfully execute cross-platform initiatives, set milestones for a team, and proactively ensure all core goals are hit, even if plans need to be changed to do so
  • Accurately breakdown and estimate large projects
  • Establish an Analytics roadmap the delivers the needs of business and accounts for technical initiatives as well
  • Collaborate with our business strategy team, product owners and engineering teams to deliver on the Analytics roadmap

What We’re Looking For:

  • 7 + year(s) experience with ETL/ELT solutions. We use dbt (data build tool) and Airflow
  • 3+ years of managing data engineers and data analysts.
  • 5+ year(s) experience and expert level knowledge working with data lake/modeling/warehouse and reporting solutions
  • 3+ years(s) of using R or Python for analysis
  • 5+ year(s) experience as a data analyst – you are able to break down are large datasets quickly and gather insights in minutes
  • Advance SQL skills – you have the query written in your head as soon as some one asks a question
  • Strong knowledge of, and competencies in, industry best/next practices in data and analytics solutions
  • Command line and git experience
  • Experience with data governance, security and retention policy and process implementation
  • An insatiable drive to learn quickly and stay-up-to date on industry trends, tools, and more
  • Highly motivated to work autonomously with strong project management skills – you are highly organized

You May Also Have:

  • Passion for ocean-going activities
  • Experience using data and analytics solutions like Snowflake, Amplitude, Segment or FiveTran 
  • Building advanced data pipelines
  • Experience using Atlassian products
  • MS/MA or MBA degree
  • BS degree in computer science
