SUMMARY
WELL’s Engineering team is looking for a talented Engineering Manager.
You will report directly to our Senior Director of Software Engineering.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a critical part in mentoring, developing, and recruiting at WELL.
You will play a key role in attracting and retaining engineering talent, defining and improving team processes, mentoring and developing the career growth of team members, and generally ensuring that our engineering teams are operating with high morale to quality products with high velocity.
The core responsibilities of this position are on the “people manager” rather than “technical manager” end of the engineering manager continuum, but there is opportunity to contribute technically as well.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage a mix of software engineers (Backend, Frontend, and Full Stack) across varying experience levels.
Develop people and teams through coaching, mentoring, and management support.
Partner with Recruiting and HR to attract and retain a diverse team of engineers through hiring, mentoring, feedback, and career development.
Facilitate collaboration across the organization with other teams and departments.
Remove blockers and impediments to team members performing at maximum efficiency and satisfaction.
Steer the resources, training and processes to grow the technical expertise of your team around quality, scalability, performance, and high availability.
Attend Scrum ceremonies and help iterate our Agile processes to be most effective for our team members.
Conduct regular 1:1s and performance reviews.
REQUIREMENTS
BS degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.
Strong technical foundation in software engineering design principles.
3+ years experience managing or leading software engineering teams developing SaaS products.
Have a strong track record of mentoring and growing high performing people and teams.
Deeply knowledgeable and passionate about both software development and people development.
A critical thinker and frequently spot risks and problems that others fail to catch.
Understanding of either modern backend (microservices, cloud, distributed systems) or front end (React/Angular) development.
Proficient in one of the core languages (Java, TypeScript, Python, Golang, etc.) Experience building enterprise SaaS products in highly regulated environments with low risk tolerance is highly preferred.
Must work well under pressure, be sensitive to deadlines, be able to interact in a team environment, and able to adapt quickly to change Hands-on experience working with Agile teams, preferably with Scrum.

LOCATION
WELL is headquartered in Santa Barbara, CA with a second office opening later this year in Los Angeles, CA.
Today, all WELL positions are remote, and we are looking forward to when our offices reopen.
Most of WELL’s Engineering team is located on the West Coast, specifically in Southern California.
The ideal candidate is someone that currently resides in Southern California, though we are open to candidates based anywhere in the US.
Weekly or monthly travel to one of our locations is required when it’s safe to do so.
We are happy to discuss the cadence of visits with the right candidate.
