Director Of Operations

The Air University (AU) Commander and President invites applications from qualified individuals for the position of Director of Operations (A3).

The A3 integrates the efforts of subordinate organizations and staff to achieve the AU Mission.

Working closely with AUs Chief Academic Officer, the A3 directs operations and academic services and provides long-term perspective and operational continuity for the Commander and the leaders of AUs 11 wing-equivalent subordinate units.

Directing AU Operations: Works collaboratively with AU leaders in activities related to the management and governance of education, research, outreach, and doctrine development.

Develops policies and directs actions to support integration and synchronization of AU programs, particularly in the areas of scheduling, production and plans.

Coordinates education, scholarship, outreach and doctrine-development efforts to align them with the AU and higher-headquarters strategies.

Provides advice, consultation, continuity and long-range strategy on issues affecting AU programs.

Ensures academic services functions (AU Library, AU Registrar, AU Press, AU Teaching and Learning Center, AU Sponsored Programs office and AUs Innovation Accelerator) meet the needs of faculty, staff and students.

Represents AU to higher headquarters, other institutions, and visitors.

Represents AU at meetings, conferences and other forums.

Prepares and delivers briefings and reports for dissemination to AU leaders, AETC, Department of the Air Force Headquarters, Sister Services, the Joint Staff, DOD and other organizations.

Coordinates with AU staff agencies and leaders of subordinate organizations as required to achieve consensus on potentially contentious issues.

Serves as advisor to the AU Commander and Vice Commander on all aspects of Air University operations.

Advises commandants, commanders, deans and directors to facilitate execution of the Air University mission.

Teaching: Teaches in the classroom for resident programs and/or online for distance
– or blended-learning programs.

Applies appropriate instructional methodologies, administers and grades student evaluations, provides and obtains student feedback.

Advises student research projects as requested.

Supervising: Recruits and selects candidates for key vacancies, approves personnel selections or recommendations for selection by division chiefs.

Assigns and reviews work of subordinates and takes responsibility for actions taken and advice provided.

Counsels the staff on individual career development, ensures training plans and requirements are consistent with the needs of the organization and in consonance with the individual developmental needs of the staff.

Establishes performance expectations and objectives.

Rates performance of directly supervised employees, reviews others.

This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service.

This is an Administratively Determined position in the excepted service.

Skill in applying program and process-management techniques and progress-measuring metrics capabilities.

Ability to work harmoniously with others within both the military and educational environments.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to diverse audiences.

Ability to analyze problems and develop timely, effective, and economical solutions.

Ability to plan, organize, and direct the activities of cross-functional teams.

It is highly-desired that Applicants possess: Knowledge of military organizations, operations and culture.

An earned PhD degree from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution in a discipline appropriate to AUs mission which qualifies the applicant to teach in one of more of AUs graduate degree programs.
