Responsibilities
The Soraya’s Director of Development (DOD) reports directly to CSUN’s Associate Vice President, Development and Alumni Relations in partnership with the Executive Director of The Soraya.

• The incumbent is responsible for providing extensive strategic planning on behalf of fundraising efforts for The Soraya, and is charged with the articulation and implementation of program-wide development and advancement initiatives that have multiple-year objectives.

• In collaboration with The Soraya Executive Director, works to identify, qualify, cultivate, and steward donors, and enhances major fundraising and donor relations efforts by seeking new prospects whose philanthropic interests are consistent with the mission and vision of the center.

• Understands the unique and specific aspects of fundraising in the arts, possesses knowledge of the arts, as well as the value and impact of the arts in the lives of students, young people and otherwise underserved communities.

• Engages deeply with The Soraya’s performances and artists and attends performances and related events.

• As a leader, demonstrates a commitment to student success that is mission aligned with the university’s vision, values and priorities.

Establishes an ethical and collegial work environment, promoting a collaborative, accountable and inclusive team.

Encourages a courageous and resilient solution-oriented environment by participating in new opportunities to further the mission of the university.

Participates in developing initiatives that further support the campus mission with a service-oriented and catalytic mind set.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in a job-related field; Master’s degree preferred.

• Equivalent to five years of progressively responsible professional/administrative development experience; with two of the five years in a managerial role preferred.

• Experience working successfully with donors and high net worth individuals, philanthropic advisory committees, and volunteers, preferably in Los Angeles or other similar large metropolitan markets.

• A demonstrated track record of successfully closing major gifts in a competitive, sophisticated donor environment is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Leadership

• Demonstrated knowledge and proven skills in planning, implementing, and administering complex major gift solicitations and/or other solicitations of a similar nature.

• Broad knowledge of multiple art forms or in-depth knowledge of at least one performing art, preferred, and/or in-depth knowledge of philanthropy within the arts sector.

• Strong written skills and experience in writing donor communications, grants, donor promotional materials, and similar.

• Strong documented record of gifts solicited and closed in the major gifts range and/or solicitations of a similar nature, level and complexity; including experience in making cold calls and the required resilience to deal with initial resistance and rejection

• Personal ability to motivate colleagues, volunteers and donors.

• Ability to thrive in a goal-oriented environment, and to succeed both in working independently and collaboratively.

• Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends for performances as required.

• Understanding of how to work within diverse teams and how best to use diversity as an asset for the purposes of fulfilling The Soraya’s and CSUN’s mission and fundraising goals.

• Lead diverse teams to support the operational mission and vision of employers by fostering an ethical, inclusive and collegial work environment.

• Demonstrated ability to support ongoing improvement through courageous, resilient, and catalytic leadership.

• Lead varying initiatives through a collaborative, service-oriented and communicative approach.

• Demonstrated commitment to employee development, recognition, and accountability to further operational goals.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

• Salary is commensurate with knowledge, skills, and experience.

The University offers excellent fringe benefits.

• The anticipated HIRING RATE is up to $95,000 per year, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
